I have 4 older US $20 bills. Two from 1981, one 1985 and one 1990. Just regular currency from circulation. Are these worth saving?
At this point I would suggest keeping them Victor. Reason being, as stated in a few other threads, is that the Feds are actively destroying all notes from the $5 denomination on up dated 1995 and ealier (old design notes). This will ultimately drop the number of surving pieces. Usually currency is only destroyed due to excessive wear. In this venture they will destroy regardless of condition.
I agree w/ clembo. I have numerous ones that will eventually, excuse the expression, become noteworthy.
thanks Thanks guys. Yes I have been reading about the pre 1995 bills getting destroyed. Thats why I kept them. Of course I am tying up 80 bucks here so I needed to check with you experts!
Yeah, It's always the tying money up thing that gets one in currency. Been there and done that TOO many times. Sometimes you gotta let it go but in the meantime you've saved 80 bucks! Always look at it that way or you'll go nuts!
heres the deal with old styles and me. i used to keep every old style i came across. i had 4 $20's(1985 and 1990), 2 $10's (1993 and 1995), and 2 $5's (both 1995). now i just tied up $110. thats 2 weeks worth of work for me! :desk:so i decided to sell them, took them up to the flea market and nobody wanted them. offered them online and agian no one wanted them. so i got home and put aside the ones that were well worn and spent those. i now only keep the crisp AU or CU os notes i find. i do this with star notes as well. had 5 star notes spent the common ones and kept 1. i could have kept them and not buy some nice silver coins, but i did spend them on coins that i can make a profit in a couple of years. if you have any common star notes and worn old style notes, spend them on coins that will go up in value. it makes it easier. if the old styles are crisp, star, or has a cool serial number keep it. if not spend away. if your star note has a cool serial number or is a older note (ex 1995) keep it. if not spend it. you guys are putting away money that is not going to be worth anything. look, i bought a 1928B $20 note for $28. think of all the years the collector put that away only to make $8 off of it. not very much. in 1928 if he would have spend that on a 1909S VDB cent, that would be a $580 profit, not $8. gives you something to think about.
Coinlover, You have some good points and apparently you have learned a lot. You just can't keep everything when it comes to currency. It DOES get expensive real fast. Now, you may or may not make money on your coins but you're using your head here. I've parted with notes to buy a good coin at the right price on several occasions myself. Once again though, knowing your subject is key. For starters I doubt the guy held on to a 1928 note for, let's say 50 years, to make $8. More likely happened upon it or paid someone $22 or so recently and made $6. If he pulled it in the 20s it would most likely be CU or darn near and worth a lot more. Plus, who knew back then that an 09SVDB would be at what it is today? You could find THOSE in circulation back then. No one has a crystal ball and we're not all billionaires with tons of disposable income. This is why we read and research. Educated currency collectors know what to keep without tying up more money than they can afford to. Like I said earlier. You're learning - keep learning.
I say keep'em. I keep ALL the small face I come across regardless of denomination or condition, until I can replace the others that are bad shape, needless to say I have several $$$ "saved", but if it were to get bad enough can always use them to pay the light bill or whatever needed to be pd. The ones that are in the worst shape are my Silver Certs, kind of hard to replace them though. John
remove or not? On the 1990 $20 bill someone wrote with pencil on the front a small number like 456. Is there a way to take this off? Or do I just leave it?
I agree with this statement from Clembo..but pictures would really help as well. With all the destruction ongoing a mylar sleeve is in order too.... RickieB
Well I'm dull but not dumb. They are already in Mylar. Pictures you say? Hmmm... I wasted most of the day looking through 2 rolls of Madison dollars for just one good one for my girlfriend's album. Finally made her pick it out. Pathetic coins they are. Might as well waste the evening too now. But me and kodak, photobucket, and my old dial up computer don't get along very well. So I doubt if they help much Rickie.
Hello Victor, Good evening. Please do not take my statement with the misconception that I think you are dumb...not the case. You will be surprised at the amount of notes tucked away inside an acid bearing envelope! I said what I said because when I first started I did not know anything back then either. Thanks for the links...looking forward to checking them out. Regards, RickieB
