So there's a story behind this coin (bought at a flea market). I wanted first to get some people's opinion on how this coin would grade. It was in a plastic sealed slab but I have since taken it out of it.
It looks like a Type A reverse, which is the normal one if I'm not mistaken. That being said, I would guess that yours is somewhere in the AU range. I wouldn't expect it to be worth much more, if at all, more than melt.
Thanks. So my ex purchased this coin at a flea market as a gift to our daughter probably 5 or 6 years ago. The coin was slabbed in a plastic casing that is sealed and it was graded as MS64. I went online to check the TPGs website and found that it doesn't / never existed. The company is called AACGS (American Alliance Coin Grading Service). I took this one out of the casing because it looked fake, and couldn't tell by the weight because the casing is kinda big. Anyway, I think it's real and even though it's far from being an MS64...I think my daughter will enjoy it when she's much older. I currently have it in a ziplock but will get my a 2x2 cardboard casing for it. Thanks again!
Forgot to mention that she also bought another one with the 1978 P & D Ike coins which looks nice. I'll keep those two in its casing tho even though I could use $2 bucks right now for a candy bar.
It actually looks almost white shiny and that's why I thought it was fake, kind of like aluminum foil shine. I wish I can capture it on the pic but the light reflection won't let me.
Silver is the whitest metal, so the color is right on. AACGS is terrible. I have seen a few coins in that holder, they have been universally over graded.
I think AACGS is fake, there's no information I can find online for them. I've read some comments that it's a one or two people operation.
The coin itself is probably real. I don't really see anything wrong with the color (that luster is normal). I'm just an amateur but I'm willing to bet that the coin will grade at least MS63. I have a couple of quarters like that; it's a pretty nice coin.
The 64D was the highest minted coin in the Washington silver quarter series (wow 700 million plus) from 1932 to 1964. Hence it is extremely common and the cost of grading would far exceed its actual value. I like the ms64 grade based on the pic in the holder.... Fields are very nice and clean.
Thanks, yeah it's real and I do like it a lot. I'm way too new to even try and grade this lol. Appreciate your comments and I'll take an MS63 hehe.
Yeah, I'm not really into grading stuff at this time for the simple fact that I don't own any coins that would be worth the price of grading. I asked about this coin to see how "real" the AACGS rating would be compared to people's opinions here. I really like the coin and hopefully I can keep it in this condition until I pass it on to me daughter. Thanks for the reply!
