What coin excites you right now?

I like the look of world coins but I don't feel a connection to them. Essentially any foreign coin doesn't feel right to me ha

Some old US Gold, and modern gold commemoratives are selling at close to spot price.
Not a bad way to go IMO.

 

what do you mean it does not feel right ? U.S. are ok but very limited in different kinds of designs. World coins opens up so many different kinds of designs. that is what draws me to them.

 

The coin that excites me is the one I don't have, or can't afford. Lol

The Morgan. I want to finish my book but it is so difficult when Carson City pieces are so expensive and I try to budget properly.

But, because I'm starting to hit a wall with the prooflike types, I've been working on my set of Moroccan coinage.

As for US stuff that I'm excited about and would like to get: a Fugio, a pine tree shilling, and a 1795 half. Those are all super cool coins, and quite common, but low on my priority list. I'd also love a Libertas Americana.

 

I'm searching for a 1950 PR cameo Lincoln Cent. Not a very exciting coin but very difficult to find with good eye appeal at a fair price. This one will complete my Modern Cameo Proof collection.

 

I'm working on the completion of my US 20th century circulating coin collection. I have just 21 left including 8 SLQ's and 4 Barber quarters. These last 21 are getting quite pricy, especially as I get more picky on quality of the remaining ones. I'm hoping to get to 15 by the end of 2018. The last 15 will be tough, especially ones like 1901-S Barber quarter.

 

I just rounded up everything prior to getting a new larger safety deposit box; I had forgotten a half-dozen MS64-66 Walkers that I bought a few years ago. Dang, those are pretty. I think after my winter vacation I will work on a short set in those grades.&

Another area that has me excited is Civil War era coinage and commemoratives dealing with the War. I have a start on the commemoratives but the “better and brighter” examples always interest me.

I have a continuing interest in type coins but have to admit that it might be a reflection of my eyesight that half dollars hold a lot more interest than smaller coinage.

I have to wonder what does then because US coins are among the most boring in the world. They hold no interest for me.

Pretty much anything in the 1850-1950 time frame holds interest for me (earlier ones too but they are often more expensive), which is why I had to eventually restrict myself to Germany. That way there are only a few thousand to seek out.

I used to think that I was not interesting in slabbed coins, but the more I get into seeking out quality German coins the more I am thinking about it. I have been wondering recently about trying to accumulate a 20th century type set of circulating German coins in high grade slabbed. There are almost 100 of them and I only have a handful right now.

 

1857-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle MS65 from S.S. Central America ship wreck.

 

At this moment.... 1917 type one standing Liberty quarter. Found a dead gorgeous piece that I been dickering back and forth with since Wednesday. Dealer and I settled on a number (that’s still too much) Friday and now I salivate in waiting.... I should never get dead set on needing a particular piece. I end up like a person grocery shopping while hungry... But she is mine all mine now...

 

Let me preface this by saying this is just my opinion, but I like collecting US because it feels like a part of my past. Also it's easy to get people interested in their countries past so it's easier for me to share my collection with others and one of my favorite parts about collecting is sharing with others.

 

Trying to find any new 2018 coins

 

@sakata part of why they're still interesting to me is I don't even have half of a 7070 filled so I'm still introducing coins.

I have about 50 lbs of foreign coins but most are coin star reject types and after searching about 5 lbs and finding no silver and only one or two older than 1950 I kinda lost interest. As long as I haven't completed my US set I'll probably be waiting to expand. But I did find a neat square and Canadian coin that I kept.

@sakata, @spirityoda could you recommend a cool cheap foreign silver coin to look into? Maybe you guys can get me started?

 

Back in the 1970’s when I was but a lad and just eat up with coin fever... The government announced that they had found a hoard of those Carson City dollars. I was a relatively poor kid but my grandpa (God bless him) bought me two of those Carson City dollars that I still have in the government plastic. Yeah, there is something magical about that CC mintmark. Hope you get those Morgan’s.

 

You cannot go wrong with anything from South America. That is actually what interested me first until I discovered all the coinage of the German States. But after I started on German States I realized there were far too many and I backed off to more modern German. Now I am trying to get one coin from each states (silver or base metal) and concentrating on more complete collection of 1870 onwards.

 

Morgan Dollars. I got a book from my aunt before she passed and she also gave me two to put in there. Ever since I have been fascinated with them. Will finish the book some day but the morgan series is what interests me the most.
