I was reading an article in another thread that reminded me of this coin. I thought it was a deteriorated die mixed with some pmd but kept it because I thought it looked cool. After reading the article I wondered if this was possibly the discussed error. Thoughts?
My initial thoughts as well. Are you able to glean any information from the full images? The tops of the letters "In God" may actually be better than what I posted in the close-up. The reason I initially kept the coin was because of the difference between the obverse and reverse. The obverse looks weakly struck but the reverse is fairly normal.
Don’t know if I’ve welcomed you or not so welcome to CT. Worn dies has my vote also. Also for future reference when @Fred Weinberg gives you his opinion the question has been answered. Hope this helps. Sincerely Reed.
Thanks for the welcome. I didn't mean to sound as I disagreed with a known resident expert. I was really only asking (and not very well) if my images were helpful. Thanks again.
This is die deterioration. The term you were thinking of is "grease-mediated radial smear". Here's an example: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/question-about-mechanical-doubling.298565/
