As it happens, my poll was a sham, and full of more than the usual nonsense this time. I had already bought BOTH coins before I posted all this. Just couldn't resist having some fun. Got the Philly sammich, too, as y'all can see, so I covered all the bases here except the kale smoothie. I'll leave that one to my vegan sister. @dougsmit- your janitor janiform heads look quite pensive. Everybody on there looks like they're deep in thought. The subtle variations in ancient portraiture within the same types never ceases to amaze and fascinate me. Any chance you or anyone else here can give me any info on the little Sindh coins in Post #14? Even just the most basic sketch, like what the denomination is called, perhaps? I think @Alok Verma might've mentioned that in his PM, and I'll go back and check, but I'd like to learn a little more about those. I'll probably keep one or two of them and give some away.
Many thanks to my personal graphics guru, @Deacon Ray, for "shadowboxing" the pictures. (Obviously there is no sense of scale in these, but that's why I supplement them with secondary images and cite sizes in the writeups- if I ever get around to catching up with the last year and a half of overdue writeups, that is. It was my numismatic New Year's resolution. Will start working on that soon.) The good Deacon also did my other recent newp: this sweet octagonal 36mm French jeton, which is a wee bit more modern. I've been a busy bee, and the Eclectic Box will have grown a tad in the next update, as there have been four arrivals in 2018 and no departures.
I have a preference for the Pharkadon but that's just me. Here is mine. I had a real soft spot for the bull wrestling types for a while.
Wow, I love that seemingly broad flan with the perfect centering! Nice half-horse, too! Better features on his head and mane, and he's not missing part of his jaw like mine is. (That doesn't hurt if you're already missing half your body, though.) I prefer the grey toning on mine, but that's just my thing. Yours is arguably nicer.
It is a lovely type and yours is a good example. Mine had some flatness of strike in the middle of the obverse because all the silver is in the horse because the flan was too broad to leave enough in the centre. It was the thought of wrestling a bull as a right of passage to adulthood that I still find intriguing. Let alone the Minoans leaping through the horns of a bull.
My Pharkadon hemidrachm, also ex BCD. And perhaps it'll make you feel better about having only the animals' halves on your hemidrachm if you consider that the obols offer up just their heads.
Wow! I love the well-defined obverse, there. Fantastic. I had not yet plunged into learning the stories, here. When it comes to ancients, I buy mostly on aesthetic instinct and then learn the history. They've been very educational.
The whole thing was a sham. Why you... Jk. Good times and cool coins. I've been trying to get one of those lil janitorforms for a while but keep getting out bid. Congrats and thanks for sharing. Ps, Flash is the cats pajamas. After Flash Gordon defender of the universe?
OK, so y'all got a fake poll this time, but hey, there were coin pitchers and Philly sammich pitchers and a cat pitcher, so what more could you ask, right? Speaking of cats, Flash is a fine fella, handsome as can be, and a totally laid-back, mellow, made-of-marshmallow creature. Makes a fine footwarmer in the bed. An excellent doorstop, too. One has to slide him outta the way with one's foot when he's collapsed chillin' in front of the fridge. Just don't leave him unattended with your Philly Cheese Steak or any other kind of sammich. He's not named after Flash Gordon, but I'll tell him you said that. That's sure to make him happy sleepy. He's named after Flash Foods, a local convenience store with a large feral cat colony, which we affectionately refer to as "Kitty City". Flash is fond of ladymarcovan's homemade Tater n' Bacon Soup, too. I have a lot of pictures like this... The "Vulture Lurk": Chicken Kiev! Mmmm! Hangin' with Victoria: His natural state:
Your pills crack me up LordM I like both coins but voted for cheesteak and #1. Edit: I meant "polls" (stupid spell check) though presumably pills could do the trick as well
Some pills could crack you up, I suppose. After I had surgery last summer, I was high as a kite from the anesthesia (shots, not pills), and went around singing a Bob Marley song for the rest of the day. While I had only moderate enthusiasm for Marley under normal circumstances, his "Three Little Birds" was playing in the surgical suite while the doc mounted the Terminator laser cannon I had requested in my right arm worked on me, and that song became a sort of anthem for me. "Don't worry about a thing 'Cause every little thing Gonna be all right" Hm. No wonder Marley's music resonates so well with the stoner crowd, huh? (Aside from the fact that it IS a nice song, and is actually a rather apt selection for a surgical setting.)
