Just can't really decide what mintmark, or if it is even a mintmark. Took 3 pictures, one a 1916 s, 1916 d, and the one I really can't tell. Looks kinda like a s but the position is all wrong. Just let me know what you guys think.

There's all kinds of tooling around it. Perhaps someone was trying to alter an S to a D.

I don't wanna tell you what I thought it looked like.

I have two 1916-D Dimes. One is slabbed in my safe deposit box. And I have a forgery that plugs the hole in my book. It’s a very well done fake that was created more than 30 years ago because I have had it that long. The give away to me is that the added D mintmark is dead perfect. It’s just too sharp to be genuine..... Rather makes me wonder why somebody with that talent would waste it creating a forgery that was maybe worth 150 bucks at the time.

The mystery coin is an attempt at an alteration to create a D mint mark where there wasn't one. Didn't go too well.

Ya I thought the same the only spot where there's a mark on the coin. But my mom inherent about 50 pounds of junk silver, which mostly contained Washington quarters, Roosevelt dimes, and about 400 mercurys. I went through them all and notice a 1916 mercury a hole was drilled right where a mintmark would of have been. Just saying you never know why some people mess with coins. Found about 40 type b quarter and another type c quarter. And maybe a 1942/1941 d dime. Can upload a picture if you guys want to see it but I need to send it in to verify.

Upload the picture of what you think is a 42/1-D dime and we should be able to confirm it (or crush your dreams).

I say that's an attempt at an altered mint mark.

Hard to see through pictures, I just was basing my assumption from variety vista, it had slight doubling in God we trust, and the position of the most mark. Now crushing time.

The supposed "mintmark" shown in the OP simply is not as hoped. Unfortunately, the same goes for the supposed "1942/1-D".

Yeah, that 1942's blob on the loop of the 2 and blip below the stem of the 4 were enough to make me do a triple-take, but they aren't right. The photo is definitely good enough to be certain.

I so wish I could. I have much I want to ask/share. I seem to be stuck. Forum thinks I am awaiting confirmation. Which I have done over and over. I can post on peoples threads but I can't create one. Hoping it will get corrected somehow..... I am far more experienced with coins than I am 21st century tech devices....

Well I can understand we didn't have computers in school when I went, I didn't even get a smart phone until 2 years ago so I no what you mean.

Hang in there they will get it fixed
