    The rim appears to have letters or/ and grooves.

    It appears like it but it is simply PMD - Post Mint Damage.
    Most likely someone trying to alter the edge.

    There are also counting machines/rolling machines
    that put that kind of 'reeding' on the coin if it gets
    jammed in the machinery.

    Not an error, didn't leave the US Mint like that - PMD
