    From the article:
"Intriguingly, the Act also features a provision preventing issuance of a dollar coin for any state or territory that becomes independent of the U.S. before its entry in the program is struck."

    I'm looking at you, Texas.

Might stir up interest in the hobby like the state quarters series.

However, dollar coins don't circulate as long as there's dollar bills. Will we make these new dollar coins for circulation and fill the vaults again or will they be made only for collectors from the get go?

At my college, all the vending machines give back dollar coins. Maybe if all vending machines started to move toward this, maybe interest would be sparked again. Worth a shot i guess. We have a gazillion in the vault anyway.

The CCAC will be involved in the selection process so this almost certainly will be a another horrible series. Let me know when we can do a series without them ruining the design selections.

Yawn, another boring program that would result in added expense but no profit for the mint. After all they had to stop issuing the Presidential and Native American dollars as circulating coins as no one wanted them. There's still millions of unused dollar coins already sitting in vaults stored because again no one wants them. Changing it to another boring program isn't going to spur anything beyond very mild collector demand.

Shaking head in disgust. Did they not learn anything with the whole ATB Quarter program? Now let's take an idea that died a terrible death and implement it into a coin that does not circulate. Genius!!

I can see the next GSA sales program in 20 years... Minimum bid for a $1.00 coin will be $0.35....

Sorry, but it's a ridiculous idea. Until just recently the Mint was still selling Prez dollar sets all the way back to 2011. Falling sales of mint and proof sets should have been a wake up call but someone is still asleep at the wheel. And the overlapping coins in these sets was nonsense. Left all of us with coins we did not need. This will all fall back on the collectors who are purists and need everything new that comes out, regardless of cost and no future value. Personally, I am done with the end of the current quarter series and am pursuing upgrading of certain series and filling holes in classic series. Much better time and money spent. IMHO.

Whoopee. As you can tell, I can’t wait. Congress always has time to micromanage our coinage, it seems.

I just can't wait to see another series of computer designed, low relief, cartoonish looking Chucky-E-Cheese tokens.... Where have the artists gone? Have they disappeared along with the pride in workmanship? I for one would be willing to pay a premium for a well executed design sculpted from plaster and mechanically reduced and prepared for production in the old traditional way. Every time a computer and CNC machines become involved in producing dies, you lose the organic feel of the design.

I like that. It’s very, very accurate.

    Doesn’t sound horrible to me.
I doubt anyone in the general public would even be aware of the series, though. Dollar coins don’t ever circulate so I don’t see this bringing any new people into the hobby like the state quarters may have.
I’m sure most of the reverse designs will be terrible.
One weird thing, the article states “$1” will be on obverse and reverse.

I actually don’t think it’s an artist issue anymore. I really believe almost the entire blame lies with the CCAC. They pick terrible designs consistently and everytime an artist has gone all out with a design it gets passed over. To many people on that committee are just trying to make statements with what they pick and the artists are now just designing to try and get selected by them instead of trying to make the best design they could.

The CCAC is just one piece in the puzzle. They don't select the designs - they make recommendations and suggest modifications. The Comission of Fine Arts is also involved, and the final decision is with the Mint.

My head hurts from all of the time travel and bad math.

    A little late for 2017.

    2018 thru 2031 is 14 years (not 2017-2031)

    4 x 14 = 56

    1 George Washington Signature Coin
    50 states
    1 DC
    5 Territorries
    adds up to 57 coins.

I just get burned out on all this. It's too much and I think a lot of people have just lost interest.
