I found this 2007 "metal" penny, not sure what it is made of actually though. It's definitely on the wrong planchet, thicker than a regular penny. Could someone help me out? Any guesses? I apologize if my post has any errors, I read the rules I promise!
Welcome to CT I was going to take a stab at it but the more I looked I decided to let the more experienced guys. It appears to have a lot of environmental damage also it appears to have a misaligned die. But other then that we will let them give you more info. Also I'm not a where of the mint using any metal plankets other then 1943. Dave
Thanks anyway, and definitely don't give up if you want to take a stab. I found it in a bunch of rolled coins from a laundromat. The color definitely caught my eye first, but nothing else matched up when I tried to detect what it is. It is not magnetic, so it isn't steel like my 1943 pennies. It's definitely misaligned, although its the same circumference of the penny, I think it lost the letters because it is thicker, unless that punched it out a bit wider. I watched a youtube video where a guy was saying that we minted money for other countries and that sometimes they can find their way into ours. I'd have to find the video again for details, but I don't know if it would give me insight on this because that wasn't as recent as 2007.
Well I can tell you since 1982 cents have been made out of 95% zinc and 5% copper plating but none made out of silver. I guess anything is possible but not likely. As far as tubboob don't believe everything you see because most of what they post is BS. I do no that lol Dave
Due to the rolled-up rim, my guess is that it is a "dryer coin", and as a result of its tumbling inside a dryer or similar piece of machinery, it also lost its copper plating, exposing the inner zinc core. (As @Dave363 mentioned, modern Lincoln cents since 1982 have all been 95% zinc with only a 5% outer layer of copper.) PS- I just read the part about you finding it in a laundromat. Bingo! There you go. It's a "dryer coin".
I have one like this..it's difinately bigger than a penny almost the size of a nickel. I dont think a dryer could stretch it...???
