Seated liberty half dime rpd?

Discussion in 'Error Coins' started by Eagles n Indians, Jan 16, 2018.

  1. just got this one in. It’s a pretty decent coin with some die clash but I’m having trouble determining if the 8 in the date is doubled or just clash marks. 9C97ACED-1326-4B32-85D9-DFEE3FC0DF5E.jpeg D3D39948-F940-4151-93DE-95BAC8A59B79.jpeg What do you think?

Well I don't know about the 8, but that is a sweet die clash.

    Thanks,

Cool clashed die coin. I'm thinking it's just clash marks.

It isn't a RPD ,mpd,or the ddo as the date position is not correct . The cut D top in united is a pup for the ddo, however I see no doubling on other devices.
As the other posters have stated the clash is what's causing the effect. Sweet specimen

I took that out but I need a refresher course. I thought when elements from both sides were transferred to the opposite sides on the same coin it would be a counter clash. Help me out here please Larry. Edit-Got to go for tonight but I will check back in tomorrow, thanks.

  9. I’m trying to figure out which part of the reverse that would be over and under the 8, just having a hard time. I’ve got to search for a transparent overlay or something

  12. Is there literature with varieties? I’ve got the cherry pickers guides but they’re pretty limited

Looks like a repunched 8 to me.

There a book by Kevin Flynn that list all varieties of the seated half dimes.
And yes the CPG is limited as well not up to date on half dimes,I have even found wrong information in the CPG concerning half dimes.

The date is incorrect in both style and placement to have been any of the 3 known varities of the 1872 h 10

Like the red book the CPG is a guide not gospel...to really get a handle on varities you need to buy the books that cover the series.Plus one needs to use all reference on line. 99% of my book marks are one web sites linked to 1 series or cover all known varities.
I have a nice reference for IHC but just purchased another one with updates.
Older books either out of print or out of date as far as new discoveries tend to be very costly! I do have ,would buy ,and use them if available but always follow up with the newest version.

Here is a link to MadDieClashes that has an overlay of the coin.

  19. I’m thinking it’s definitely an rpd. I did a transparent overlay and it just doesn’t match up. It might not be lined up perfect but I think it’s close enough for reference.

Yes but not the correct reverse....from 1837-1872 h-10's had several obv, and rev. Changes . The link above is not the Correct overlay for the 1872.

It absolutely does match up 100 % for the clash, edited your thumb nail to full size image.
