Does anyone know anything about this Santa money that is for sale right now? I saw it the store last night and they said that it was actual US currency with Santa's picture instead of Washington's. They want $2.50 for it. What's the deal with this stuff? Thanks David
It's been done for years actually. I have a Nixon dollar at home. Nice CU 1988-A series if I'm not mistaken. Novelty item and I thought it was cool. Betting you could actually spend one if you happened upon the right cashier.
The thing that gets me about these is that they are advertised as "Real US Currency" and that you can "Spend them in any store". The notes have the Fed Reserve seal one them, plus the signatures and serial numbers. If I picked one up, is there a way I could use the serial number to find out if it is an actual note as they claim? Let's also keep in mind I know almost nothing about paper money. I collect world paper money because I like the pictures on them...
Sorry! Answered my own question with a little bit of research on a lazy Sunday morning. Here is a link to an older thread on the Collectors Universe Forum - http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=23&threadid=573218&highlight_key=y&keyword1=santa Here is a link to the web site of the responsible party - http://www.santadollars.com/home/index.htm It also looks like they do other money, including Bunny Bucks - http://www.bunnybucks.com/ which is on a two dollar bill Cheers, David
Or the bar is dark enough. About 30 yrs ago I passed a copy of a $5.00 that was black and white, I just wanted to see if it would get by. Loved it 5 free beers. lol
Yeah, they're definitely legal tender. They're just dollar bills with Santa/Easter Bunny/Nixon pasted over the portrait of George Washington. I think they're nice gifts for small children really, but they have no collector value of course.
Then I have to share this one with you johndo and others of course. I hope no one gets offended but it's hilarious and true. Back in the days when I ran a truck stop there was a Ponderosa steak house across the street. We always joked about "diseased" meat being sold there after hours as it was the, shall we say "meeting place of ladies of the night". Truckers welcome. Whatever happened over there I didn't care about - OUR lot was off limits but after time one gets to know these people as they come over for coffee, food etc. So one morning I come in and my midnight cashier shows me a $20 note given to her the night before. It looked (and felt) like it had been done on a cheap Xerox! Seems one of these ladies had been paid with a few of these in a nice, dark truck. Of course, my midnight cashier pointed it out when she attemped to pass it. She was so mad that she just left the "note" there. Going back to "work" I would surmise.
When I saw this thread I thought it was going to be about the real Santa Claus notes. Obsoletes with vignettes of st Nicholas with or without his sleigh. Yes they really do exist. John and Nancy Wilson, former governors of the ANA have a nice colletion of them. I believe there was also a group of them in the Ford sales as well.
