I'm thinking this will get its popularity based on what happened with the ASE reverse proof to SOME degree, but yes, 30,000 is a LOT. I'd say it plays out a lot like the Martha Washington dollar in the secondary market.

What I think this could do, however, is finally boost the interest in platinum eagles. All those people suddenly excited about owning a "sold out" 30,000-minted Platinum Eagle will start scrambling, trying to get one of the 6,000-minted eagles.

I really want this reverse proof, but I am hesitant about forking out $1900 considering it would buy some really nice bust stuff. Do you think a MS69 reverse proof will sell alone for less than $1900 after being split from the set? How does the silver reverse proof sell alone from a set as well as the gold reverse proof?

If the mint is limited to 5,000 of the platinum 1/2 oz proof then how can this be minted with 30,000 proof and reverse proof's?

Until the mint come out with an official announcement about the production limit one can only guess at this point. I know a lots of people have been anticipating the release of the Platinum Anniversary set since last year. Rumors of the mintage production limits has slowly increased from what I have seen. I know from a reliable source that at one time the mint was considering 15,000 as a maximum limit. Even at this level many felt this was to high.

We will just have to wait till the mint goes on record with the maxium limit. They will stick to this limit.

In my opinion even at 30k this set will sell out . May take it a little while but it will go. Lots will have to do with the issue price and spot platinum prices...... Just my thoughts.

Without a doubt the Reverse Proof is not just another bullion coin.

Do these coins ever turn out to be sleepers?

You act as if bullion isn't collectible, but you are all over gold and silver?????

If by "sleeper" you mean a coin that suddenly appreciates in value - no.

That's what I meant, but I didn't know sleepers had to increase in value suddenly. I guess suddenness is relative.

    Aren't mintage numbers irrelevant?

I mean if it comes out on 12/13 ..does it go off sale on 12/31?

How long can they sell this for?
It's not like regular bullion where they can sell it into the next calendar year untill the next issue comes out...or is it?

If it's only on sale for 2 weeks and then pulled, at the most, a couple thousand might sell and then the rest would be melted?

Do you think they could sell 30,000 in 2 weeks?

    Please advise.

    Andrew,

I think this could sell out in 2 weeks and if not then they could keep it listed until they beginning selling 2008 platinum PR and W- Unc's. In the event they had these roll over into 2008 and they were selling then they could just postpone 2008 until all were sold.

What would be interesting is if they announced them at say $1900 a set and the spot price fell drastically and no one would buy them.

I have anticipated these since last year, but I am becoming a little hesitant as I feel in 5 years Platinum, Gold, and Silver will be much lower.

If we go into a recession next year silver and platinum are industrial metals and industry slows during a recession. Gold may go up some more, but EYERYTHING goes in cycles and eventually all metals will be lower. Its just a question of people letting a low population Platinum Reverse Eagle go much lower than what they paid. If people don't let them go then supply remains low supporting price.

If they only sell the set for only 2 weeks, it would be interesting. $1900 is too expensive for most people to buy, I don't think they can sell 30000 sets.

I thought last year's W gold and Platinum uncirculated coins would appreciate quite a bit in price, but it didn't go up much. Does anyone know the final mintage?

10th Anniversary Platinum Sets Coming Soon!

These sets have been rumored since last year's Gold and Silver Anniversary sets were released. There hasn't been much, if any, official news from the Mint regarding the release of these sets, but we fully expect they will be for sale very soon at USMint.gov. As you may know, this set will include the first ever reverse proof Platinum Eagle. We will be buying these sets from the public at a premium over the U.S. Mint selling price. For more information, e-mail John@ModernCoinMart.com. Thank you!
