I picked this coin up on eBay. After getting it home, I notice it had some very interesting doubling going on with the obverse and reverse. So I went to Wexler's and checked out the listed varieties there. The obverse was almost a dead match to the WDDO-002 in terms of the doubling on the date. But that's where this coin and the coin on Wexler's start to diverge. None of the die markers for the Wexler listed WDDO-002 are present, including the dot in front of the chin, die scratches on the forehead or the doubling present on the upper feather. My example shows fairly strong doubling in the second hair knot at the bottom. That doubling is not mentioned on the Wexler example. Flip the coin over and I start seeing indications of die doubling on the reverse around the Motto and FIVE CENTS. To complicate things, there is some strike/die deterioration doubling as well. I am including photos below for you to make your own conclusions and let me know your thoughts. There is no apparent doubling in the top feather, not the die crack across the long feather. There is no dot on the end of the chin. Here's the reverse. Notice the doubling around the motto and AMERICA. Most interesting is the dot between OF and AMERICA. It looks almost like Longacre Doubling but that would be impossible for this coin. FIVE CENTS is very interesting as well. Note the light doubling at the very tops of the letters followed by the wide spread of the strike/die deterioration doubling.
I see the doubling on the obverse, but the reverse has the look of die deterioration or MD to me, since it seems flat/shelf-like. @furryfrog02 @Rick Stachowski @Paddy54 @SuperDave any thoughts guys?
I was leaning down that road as well, except mine does not have the extra thickness on the chin, lips, nose and forehead that the CONECA DDO-002 has.
Yeah, I bought it for the holder. LOL I just love it when it turns out to be more than what I was expecting.
DDO-002 I looked at this last night and wanted fresh eyes to make a call. I do agree on Ricks attribution. Of the obv. DDO. Nice find and love the holder.two thumbs up on the find.
It's funny I almost didn't open this thread, you know another new what ever. When I saw the name I knew I could learn something. Well done.
Lee, here's some doubling between the bottom lip and the chin . Also Lee, your is a much early die stage, then the one Coneca has showing ( stage b ) .. Also the doubling is very visible under the neck ..
Love the color and the luster looks fantastic from the pics. I love seeing 37's with 38-D eye appeal.
Yeah, I had a 37-D in my sights that was just absolutely stunning! It was in an old PCGS Rattler in MS-65. It looked like a dead on 66+ possible 67. However, my stupid snipping software crapped out on me and my snipe did not get placed and I lost out on it. The price it sold for was ridiculously low.
I I think the slab is older than the coin! It would have been as much fun to own the holder AS the coin! To bad you missed it. Reed.
