OK, last night I finally got my Colombian Gold Coins from APMEX. According to APMEX, these are all AU or better. I disagree, but will keep them as I only paid a couple bucks over spot for them (actually, I sold APMEX a $1,000 bag of 40%Ag Kennedies and bought these with the proceeds, but that story is in another thread). I'll post pics of all the coins and then a closeup of one coin at random. If you ask me, not only can you see wear and scratches/bag marks, but I think they have also been cleaned. Just wanted to share and get others opinions about the possibility of it having been cleaned. I can't wait to find some time to sit down, put them in proper holders and look at each one individually. Thanks for listening.
and the closeup of one at random I'm still learning how to tell certain types of cleaning, so I may just be jumping to conclusions, but I'm pretty sure that signs of wear are present on this coin and I would believe they knock it out of the AU category.
I can't seem to get a high enough resolution scan to show it, but under magnification, it looks like there are a lot of very fine lines on the coin, especially in the open spaces of the background field. I guess it's possible that is also the result of people carrying their coins in a coin purse. I'm not sure how common that was back then.
For the $1,000 bag of 40% Ag Kennedies (exclusively pulled out of circulation) that I sent to APMEX, I got 19 Colombian 5 Peso Gold Coins (with a combined weight of 4.4745 oz Gold) and a check for about $167.
Okay Treas, let's see you put that in your' pipe and smoke it! LOL! It does roll pretty well but not the way you want it to! Besides, those OBW papers leave a nasty after-taste. Frank:hail:
OK, took at look at the coin under the stereoscope. What I thought were fine lines was just my eyes playing tricks on me. The coin is full of bag marks, but doesn't appear to be any evidence of abrasive cleaning. A lot of wear on the high points though. Now for the fun part. Yes, both the 2 and 4 in the date have been clearly repunched. The four was originally too high almost touching the portrait and the 2 was just re-orientated. Also, which I can't seem to get a good enough scan of, there are die cracks all over this coin, especially on the reverse. They must have really used those dies until they fell apart.
It is clearly not BU, but I don't see enough wear to not be an AU. I think the wear in the fields means it is AU, but if it were XF or lower I'd expect wear on the hair, and I'm just not seeing it. Then again you are the world coin guy.
:thumb:NICE COINS. To me, it looks like these coin spent a lot of time in the same bag and being soft gold they wore on each other. I don't see normal wear that would come from being in circulation and getting smooth/worn. (If that's a word). I think they beat up on each other. Bruce
When I look at the coin under the stereoscope, I see what I believe to be the original mint luster in the back ground field around the letters along the entire rim. They way it shows up on the scan I uploaded is as a brighter looking background. I don't see any of that luster any where else on the coin, especially not in the portrait. My guess is that this coin did not see much circulation, but it did spend some time in someone's pocket. I'm still learning, so I admit that I don't know when you would go from AU-50 to below.
