Has not been a good past two days Monday, we got 20 cm. of snow/ so spent a day clearing snow. Today, been glued to computer screen for Triton. Got out bid on 24 coins/ problem too many people with too much $. I did end up getting this RR coin for $500. AR Denarius 19mm./ 3.96g. supberb EF/lustrous Struck 132BC Moneyers Alburius M/ f. Geminus obv. Roma wearing winged helmut rev. Sol driving Quadriga, whipping horses
Gorgeous Denarius John! Well done, fantastic. I only have one Denarius featuring Sol, with the reverse being the Sewer Goddess of Rome!
Thanks guys/ most heartbreaking was a perfect AV Stater of Philip III/ Lysimachus/ 3 known. I was leading at 3250/ then a couple of "bigshots" in the room/ bid it up to 6000 My parents always told me to become a lawyer and make big bucks....should have listened Then I could have bought all of them.
Feel your pain - I have been outbid on about 43 coins: Roma, NN, CNG, HA Seems like peeps have some cash to spend after New Year's Celebration
Sorry about your luck today but more auctions are on the way I shouldn't have bid on anything but couldn't resist the drool-worthy Staffieri collection of Roman Egyptian coins. I wanted them all. So many interesting and rarely offered types! The catalog is keeper and will be good reference in the future. As usual, CNG was very unthoughtful and scheduled their auction to take place while I was working. The nerve!! I had to prebid and I hate hate hate prebidding. I bid on four coins shortly before the end of prebidding last night; was immediately outbid on one. The other three stood, which was potentially bad since I shouldn't be spending money on one coin, much less three. If I'd won them all it would have been bad. Fortunately my top pick stood without contest during the live bidding and I lost the other two, so that worked out really well! I now have a new Roman Egyptian coin with cool pedigree-- and they forgot to mention or didn't notice that it is also illustrated in Emmett . That's particularly notable because Emmett isn't chock full of plates. Only a smattering of interesting types are shown, scattered about the book. I'm not going to show it until it is in hand. Relative to most of CNG's auctions, the prices realized for the Staffieri section were very tame compared to the estimate, with the average hammer being only 18% above estimate. The estimates did seem rather optimistic though. Only 2 of the 273 lots were unsold. It looks like the Greek section saw tremendous action though. If you are interested in such data, here's a quickie spreadsheet of the results for the Staffieri Collection, with percentage variance from estimate. Note that the official results have not yet been published but the hammers were noted when the auction was live. The least expensive lot realized $130 (a Claudius II tet) and the most expensive was an Antinous drachm ($47,500). (edited: I fixed the spreadsheet link-- no approval or sign-in required)
I found coins I liked but none that I loved. I pre-bid only and was outbid on all of them by the time they went to the live auction. I dont think I will raise my bids on any of the gold I had bid on for tomorrow. I had hoped to save a coin from a slab (both are slabbed,) but that might not happen now...........although there is one that is still borderline 'not overpriced' and it is a rarity I would not mind owning.
I just had really good luck on New York Sale! I just won a Mint State Philip II AV Quarter Stater Only one known from those dies.
Congratulations to everyone winning lots! I was at the preview on Sunday and inspected most of the Greek, provincial, and Republican coins in Heritage, CNG, and New York Sale. Although I saw many things I wanted I decided to focus on the non-floor items instead of the big ticket treats. I should have brought a scale to the preview because I discovered really wanted to know the weight of a fraction in one of the group lots, #1549 or 1550. (If mailbidder107384 is reading this let me know.)
Congrats! I won one of the Staffieri coins and feel lucky to have snagged it. In fact, I feel even luckier now because @TIF's handy spreadsheet shows me that I won it for $25 less than what I thought my winning bid was. You'll note from the increment level that my win was not one of the A-Pi "Labors of Hercules" drachms .
I noticed many of the Greek coins did not even sell for the estimate. Is this usual for Triton sales? Normal CNG sales would have really nice coins going for 2x the estimate if not more. A lot of their best Greek coins did not sell, and it is rare to find one that even made the estimate. I did not think the estimates were higher than normal for CNG.
I haven't taken a thorough look through the Greek section, but the few that interested me all closed above estimate and in general more than I thought they would go for. I had a leading pre-bid on one particular lot going into the live auction, but it ended up hammering at over 4x estimate. My eyes popped out of their sockets and it took me awhile to collect myself and put them back in .
Okay that explains the poor showing on the Greeks. I almost feel better looking at all the low bids i "missed".
Thanks, but due to you great members of the Ancient Coin Forum, you all got me into AR Denari I also have a small Taler collection.
