I'm sorta the school's coin dealer now. Word got out that I collect, so people have brough in stuff for me to look at. I bought a 1935F silver cert in fine condition today for $2, and tomarrow she's bringing in a whole stack of 'em. (when she was selling candy for a fundraiser she was paid with a stack of silver certs!!). It's great buying from students, they're happy if you offer them $0.25 above face. As far as they're concerned, I'm an idiot for buying money for more than is written on it!
I havn't bought anything other that that silver cert. yet. BTW, someone wondered why I paid $15 for a silver dollar, they said $1.50 was too much!!
hopefully they were hers, and wasnt helped from her fathers or mothers collections. but, giving the benifit of the doubt... its a good deal for both of you. she would otherwise h=just get a dollar for each if she spent them, and you gave her twice that. both parties are happy!
$2 is about what a dealer may have offered in fine condition. I think it was a good deal for both. - just my opinion...
Hamman...you can say that it's like taking candy from a Baby...post some of those pics when you get em... RickieB
This is what I would REALLY worry about. You may consider contacting their parents, before completing the transaction. It would be the morally correct thing to do and it could save you a big headache down the road.
I'd be careful about other students trying to steal your lunch money... when word gets out, it's a double edged sword. You might have a modest collection, but some might not see it that way. Let's be careful out there...
i think thats a good idea since people at my school have no idea what coins or worth, and they don't care.
Hamman, Sounds like you have a great thing going there but PLEASE take into heart what others have mentioned. There is a moral responsability as Roto mentioned. Think about it BEFORE you collected. If you had a 1921 Morgan Dollar and someone offered you $1.50 would you take it or be like most non collectors and think "this is really rare"? As for "taking care of your coins" you may be able to do that BUT if 5 guys know you're taking $100 to school to buy coins could same 5 kick your butt and take your money? I suggest taking your venture cautiously. DO get in touch with the parents and DO your transactions off campus. Your home, their home etc. You're still in your teens dude don't make a bad name for yourself. As more people learn about what you do the potential for more bad comes into play. If parents start losing coins while you gain coins you have tarnished your own name EVEN if it wasn't you. Food for thought and a big meal at that.
Quite true, quite true. BUT.... You are old enough to get your butt kicked (or worse, shot) by a POed father, who's collection you purchased without his permission. I'm just trying to help you look out for your own well-being. Not every person out there is a rational person. People can do some really unpredictable and vicious things. Just be careful.
