At one time, Lady Liberty appeared on the obverse of nearly every American coin. It makes sense that would be the case since America was founded on principals of liberty and freedom. In fact, we fought an entire revolutionary war in order to free ourselves from the tyranny of British colonial rule. Hence a nation which places the symbolic embodyment of liberty front and center on her nation's coinage. Today, US coins almost universally feature a politician on the obverse. Relating to this, I would like to bring in a quote: "The natural progress of things is for liberty to yield and government to gain ground." ~ Thomas Jefferson I propose that Liberty be returned to her proper position on our coinage, and I sincerely hope that a change like that would also pay huge dividends in how Americans feel about issues of freedom and tyranny. Who is with me? How do we attempt to bring about such a change in US coinage?
I would support the change but only for aesthetic reasons. I doubt that the images appearing on coinage would change how Americans feel about these important issues.
I am totally with you on this, as I'm sure most of us here are. Sadly, I don't think it's gonna happen anytime soon. And to think, in 1979, we almost had a truly beautiful depiction of Liberty make it's way back onto U.S. coinage: http://www.smalldollars.com/dollar/page04.html *Sigh*
I agree, the portrait of Lady Liberty should grace all of our coinage. Not just the Statue of Liberty on a gimmick $1.00 coin, but the "Old Gal" in a profile of herself. With a strong eagle on the reverse holding some (50) arrows in a talon...
Deal me in, AJ ! I'm with ya. And I gotta say, Jhonn... I really like the obverse of that coin. Apparently, Gasparro really admired the $10 Indian and the 1793 1/2c... he combined them for that portrait. But we can do much better on the reverse. Need a stronger eagle, like the one on the Ikes. And to think we wound up with those Susan B. Anthony horror stories instead of that...America's worst coin design.
I am in agreement will all who have written. The current $1 is a gimmick, and the last two $1 were an abomination. I love that Gasparro dollar! Now that is a step in the right direction. So who do I start calling and writing to bug about this?
not me, lady liberty is just borrowed from the french who borrow her from the Romans, nothing unique about her at all. I say bring back the truely unique american imagry such as the indian... In the end...I dont want to go back in time with our coins...maybe do it with one coin as a tribute or something but to be honest, american coins with all liberty was boring and not in any way unique to america... and who wants that... PS...I likes the pres dollars...much better idea than slapping the tired old lady liberty on everything...of course liberty should always be on the coins all the same.
I'm all for some sort of change...any change! The whole dead President on a coin idea has worn out it's welcome with me. There's no room for artistry, just smug, dusty portraits on those type of coins. maybe if they had thrown a nice war bonnet on Jefferson or a laurel wreath on Lincoln things would look more pleasing. At least with the old Liberty designs, they could be changed and mixed-up to form a work of beauty. Washington, Lincoln, Franklin...they all did great things in their lives to make this a great country...but they aren't very beautiful. We've lost our artistry in coinage. Guy~
I'm totally for removing Dead Presidents from coins and going back to "old school". As mentioned earlier though most people wouldn't really understand it. Save the "political" figures for commemoratives. If you really think about our dollar coins are really nothing more than overproduced commemoratives that the mint hypes for general circulation.
Although we all express our dislike the pres dollar and state quarter programs i think that is where our future numismatists will be coming from. they are acting as a gateway into coin collecting. These programs can also be used as an educational tool. As each pres dollar comes out my son has to write a short report on that president (he is home schooled). As he gets older the reports will have to get more detailed. His interest in collecting is growing and now some of his friends are getting involved. That being said, we don't need ALL coins to be presidential. I would love to see a modern version of the eagle and indian cents for a few years and maybe a modern version of the buffalo nickel also. I think 50-100 years is enough for one design. There enough denominations for a variety of coins. This would go for paper currency also. Just my thoughts Richard
Basically everybody. This should help give you some ideas - Click Here Now, a word of warning, be careful what you ask for. You just might get it. But it's very likely that it won't be quite what you asked for.
Wow, that design for that Gasperro made is very nice! I'd probably be all for that as a dollar coin. I'm with you man to bring Lady Liberty back. :thumb: Phoenix
I wouldnt mind any redesing depicting Liberty over what we have now. Heck, i might even be inclined to more dead presidents... we just need a change. Our coinage inthe states is old, stale and completely un-artworthy.
the idea is good, but the design hints too much at modernism. A more classical greek would be much better. But I dont think i would complain if our coinage had even a modern rendition like what you presented. any change for the sake of change can never be good... but come on already! Our system needs new designs, not these gimmick designs for 4 or 10 years that will just revert back to the same or simlar design. thats just not new ....
you guys can try but i doubt many people want George, Tom, Abe, JFK, and FDR off the coin including me
