I thought they would have at least frosted that shoulder area instead of making it look like half of him is missing but unfortaunately I was wrong. It looks even worse with the proof finish than it did in the design

Yes it does and I’m sure we paid Mr. Transfield handsomely for his crappy work

I don’t get how that obverse won the design contest. But I think the winner only got 10k.

Not as much as I would have expected. But I’m still abhorred about the poor quality of artwork used to produce that Obverse design.

Now that it’s finalized I am too. The rifle looks pretty good but I just can’t get over that open shoulder area and it looks especially bad on the proofs.

Not to mention it’s not a great sign when their presentation piece already has spots all over it. Some maybe dust but not all

Without shoulder details the arms don’t look like his arms, it looks like some else is holding the rifle! I was so busy looking at the shoulder and eye I forgot about seeing the spots and dust. This coin really is a train wreck!

A second floating rifle that follows you around probably would be useful in war, but completely agree that it just looks wrong and awkward without the shoulder

Bottom line here is we, the public, don’t need artists like Mr. Transfield designing our coinage. His talents are better suited for graphic novels I would think. Mr. Transfield’s got the noses down! Scary how much it looks like comic book art isn’t it. Other countries numismatists must just laugh at us. Sad!

I was excited when they did the open contest. The baseball one was done the same way and it was fantastic and frankly the mints work lately has been terrible overall. At least we know now that it doesn’t matter what process is used it’s probably going to be terrible if they keep having the wrong people in charge picking the designs.

I’m convinced more now than ever they need to do public votes on the design or at least fire everyone of the people they have picking designs

Yes I feel it’s in the design selection committee where the problem lies also. The people selecting the coin designs probably have change in their pockets but that’s as close to being collectors as it gets I bet. It looks like They just don’t know about coins. How else can we end up with this comic book art?

Maybe you should actually have a look at some of the GDR ("East German") collector coins first. ;) Many Russian commems are very nice too ...

Either bad taste, agendas, or both. A lot of times it looks like they’re looking for the easiest to execute designs that don’t have a lot of detail, which may in fact be what they’re doing

Perhaps we should hire a few Russians to design our coinage?

Just think of all the fun conspiracies!

I didn’t know they had hip hop playas back in WW2. All he’s missing is the gold grill! Lol.

Yes the Baseball coin design is a “Home Run” for sure and a perfect example of a simple design working on both Obverse and Reverse sides. Because of this design it works perfectly for a coin!

And what do we have here a REALLY simple design that has worked for a couple of days
or so. It’s not the design folks it’s the artist they let do them!
