We will write Mr. Theodosius and Mrs. Theodosius on our name tags. I am hoping to make a trade with one of the big dealers. They have something I REALLY want and I have something I HOPE they want. We will see... John
Is it worth trying to park at the convention center by 11 am or should we just go to South Regional parking garage by then? Last year we wasted 30 minutes cruising the convention center garage and eventually left.
Well, I went to the FUN show today. I had a great time looking through the Ancients coins and talking with the various vendors. I even got into a great discussion about Roman Britain. The best part of the show came when I met Mr. and Mrs. Theodosius. What a great couple. It's always nice to meet one of you in person. Sadly, however, I came away empty handed. None of the vendors had even one of the MA Legionary denarii I was looking to buy. The other coins I might have purchased were priced, imho, way over market. So much so, that even if I was offered one at 50% discount, the price was still too high for me. But I did see some very beautiful coins. One of the vendors even had part of his personal collection of Greek and Roman coins on display. They were beautiful but not for sale even if I could afford one of them. All in all, I enjoyed the day even though I returned home with green still in my wallet, and it wasn't patina.
Yeah, a lot of what I saw at last year's FUN seemed pretty overpriced to me also. I mean, I don't mind paying a little more in person than I would normally want to pay if it was offered online, only to help the dealer out with the expenses of coming to FUN, but not if its going to be an unreasonable markup. Even though you didn't get anything, there's always plan B: spending your coin cash online
Aidan is most definitely the 'tall blond kid'........the leather, though? It interferes with the 'surfer' genre...........better to loose the jacket my friend. Next year in Orlando fellows.........I love Orlando. Ice bound in the North at the moment. Commitments and obscurity's. Gosh dang, I wish I could have attended.....
My wife and I really enjoyed meeting and talking to you as well Bing. I told her to look out for a retired navy admiral with a good sense of humor and she spotted you right away. Sometime we all have to stay overnight at the show hotel so we can go out for a CoinTalk group dinner and an extended conversation! That is too bad you could not find your missing legionary denarius, you must be down to the really scarce ones now.
I was unable to make the trade I wanted at the show because the dealer loaned the piece in question to another dealer who may have sold it. Oh well, he is going to check next week. I am totally beat from driving six hours and crawling the show floor for as long as we could. I did manage to find some good stuff. Look through Pegasi's $25, $50, $75 pick bags if you go to the show. Lots of good deals to be had there. I was afraid to look in their $100 pick bag because of the damage the others had already done. John
The damage was done in the $50 and under, where I found the Hadrian tet and the coin I'm going to post today.
Wishing I could have been there. A few months back I asked the CT folks which show they would attend if they could only attend one, due to distance and/or financial limitations. The overwhelming response was the January FUN show. So, I started making plans for my wife and I to swing by, stay with friends at Sanibel Island, on our way to Green Valley, AZ (yeah, a bit of a side trip from Minnesota, but my newly-retired wife was up for a roa trip). Unfortunately our Sanibel friend started radiation for cancer in November, delaying their own trek from Minnesota. We're planning on next year, and having CT names on the tags would be awesome, as I've never met anyone in person. Unlike lucky @Theodosius, Mrs. Stevearino won't be prowling the floor with me. A nearby mall will be her destination. Steve
I am unbelievably lucky that my wife enjoys going to shows and helping to hunt for the things I like. I think dealers remember us more as a couple than they do when it is just me. Here are some nice pick bag byzantine I found. I did not know Byzantine coins came in "round". These are even nicer in hand than my pictures show. I also picked this one out of their $35 bag: Justin II, 565-578 AD AE Follis, Constantinople, Year 1, Delta officiana, 14.94 gm Obverse: D N IVSTINVS P P AVI, Justin, holding globus cruciger, and Sophia, holding cruciform sceptre, seated facing on double throne, both crowned; cross between. This thread is making me sad that I wasn't there to meet you folks! I have got to plan on doing this next year! I know Mrs. Aethelred will jump at the chance and I might even be able to talk the reclusive @lordmarcovan into going.
I still have not one coin from Justin II. His Solidi (extra common) are really hard to get in FDC....no idea why?
Yes, let's start planning our FUN 2019 trip this fall. It has now been a decade (to the month!) since I last attended a show. I was just too daggum broke this year.
