Hi. I have 2 Henning nickels (1944). ICG said they will label them as "Henning Nickel" and slab them, but they of course will be labeled as "counterfeit" and "for educational use only" with a bright yellow label. I feel that counterfeits in general should not be slabbed by grading companies. However, like it or not, the Henning Nickel actually is a piece of U.S. Numismatic history (I am a Social Studies Teacher near Buffalo, NY). Any thoughts here? I don't take offense to other viewpoints, so please be honest, especially you experienced collectors (I am new to collecting).
Send them, they will label them for educational use only" with a bright yellow label. Nothing wrong with that
There is no harm in certifying these coins as what they are, but I also understand that typically authentication does not result in encapsulation. Keep this in mind, they are certifying these because their primary source is known. This is not true of most counterfeit coins.
My take, 1. If the TPG’s will slab it then it’s legal to own. 2. It might be a fake but coolness factor trumps sometimes. 3. It’s a Collectable it’s okay heck I have my dogs 1st tick in a 2X2. 4. Like you stated it’s a piece of U.S. numismatic history I’d say go for it and don’t look back. P.s. I put the tick in the 2x2 to gross the kids but they think Mr. Ticksworth is pretty cool! This tick is why my son got so interested in science and is going to be a doctor. He might even make it, He passed O Chem the first shot! Oh boy only 8 more years of college to pay for! Obverse Reverse
We here on the wild coast are less refined than you East Coast blue bloods. Takes less to entertain us. Or at least me.
I have no problem with Counterfeits being slabbed and actually like the idea. A lot of people do collect them or like to acquire them to learn from them and as long as they remain slabbed there isn’t any doubt about what they are to anyone. I’d like to see the others follow suit at least for contemporary ones.
Grrrrrrrr! I was about to post that! But Henning nickels are actually very cool I'm going to get one, one day. Thanks, Jacob
A few TPGs also still grade/slab the Micro O Morgan Dollar counterfeits, since they have a following and are still listed as VAMs. No problem with them being slabbed as long as they are documented correctly for what they are.
Despite the fact that I would like to own a Henning Nickel for educational purposes, ICG's grading and encapsulation of one is reprehensible and smells of desperation on their part. They should reject the coin and simply provide documentation that provides the reason for the rejection that the coin is counterfeit.
... he said, staking out an intellectually honest consistency that comports with his feelings about Dan Carr's work.
I actually wish one of the big 2 would slab contemporary counterfeits along with certain other interesting numismatic items such as counterstamps potty dollars etc
That's bad, but not as bad, because his pieces are of coins that never existed, not actual counterfeits.
