you would really call that AU-50??? Id say XF. For me to say AU, It has to be real close to MS with only Very Slight wear and no other blemishes more than a few bag marks
i dont see any wear on the lettering. the gouge on the obverse is distracting thou. the reverse picture isnt the greatest. thats why i said au-50 at the very max.
Alright, you did say at most. I thought the gouge was distracting as well so I would never say AU. But as far as the wear that Im seeing, is the detail on the building itsself. Like the windows, the steps and the pillars.
Yeh, the nickel alloy is really tough to get full strikes on. That's why "full steps" are important. And from what I can tell the big TPGs will give a FS designation starting at 5 steps (6 steps is the top.)
While the coin is poorly struck I do think there is light wear on the collar, eyebrow, cheek and in the hair. I also think there is wear on the portico, the legends and a bit on the dome. I would agree with AU50.
If I replaced the 1949 with 1999 and if we ignore the "D" on the reverse, would you guys still grade it AU50? Cut to the chase - do the same standards apply to 1949 as they do to 1999? Just a quicky... Thanks
No the same standers don't apply to both dates. Since 1949 there has been a few "updates" to the dies on the Jefferson Nickel. The hair has been redone to be shaper, Monticello has been redone, and other parts of the design has had some changes. I don't have the dates infront of me but I think some of the updates took place in the early 70's. Then they have been updated at other times and people just haven't reported it yet. If this was a 99' I would say the grade would be something like F/VF. I have to agree with Doug on this one! The 49-D is known for a weak strike, and is almost unknown with Full Steps. But there seems to be wear on parts of it. Also that nick on the jaw bone lowers the grade I think. AU53 at best. Speedy
according to the whitman guide on buffalo and jefferson nickels 49-d 's were almost always poorly struck.
I think it is an illusion. I'm pretty sure that this is a scan of the coin and sometimes when I'm scaning one that happens. Speedy
And hence is the difference between market and technical grading. FWIW, the coin is quite impressive regardless of the grade and should have a real market. Ruben
I would disagree. The design was changed and therefor the grading has to be taken into account when looking at such. I don't think that this is a good coin to show the differents from market and technical. Speedy
If either of these coins get graded as AU, I will buy the owner two MS coins and trade them. You guys are nuts.
thanks everyone!:kewl: the doubling on the profile is just the scanner becuase everytime i scan a nickel, it turns out like that. i haven't checked it yet for the D/S yet.
