This was a 2017 purchase, one of dozens I haven't shown. 2017 was a rough year and 2018 isn't off to a great start either. I still have no cell signal or internet at home and don't have as much time to spend with coins. I had hoped to catch up with CoinTalk to some degree over Christmas but I was in Texas with family and (appropriately, I suppose) spent the time with them instead of staring at the computer No big writeup, just the coin: EGYPT, Alexandria. Domitian RY 14 (CE 94/5) Æ drachm, 36 mm, 25.42 gm Obv: Laureate head right Rev: The Emperor driving biga of centaurs right., raising hand and holding scepter and reins; in exergue, L IΔ Ref: Dattari-Savio Pl. 17, 453 (this coin); Geissen 406 (this coin cited); RPC 2704 (this coin cited) Ex Dattari Collection Not the sharpest coin but interesting nonetheless Sorry I haven't been around in the last few months. I miss you people! Bests wishes for a prosperous and healthy 2018
I miss your awesome posts @TIF ! That is a GREAT Drachm! Cool Biga! Pretty unique. I wonder how many times people saw that trapsing down the streets of Alexandria??? I only have one Centaur, and it is in pretty tough shape... Frentani - Larinum AE 18mm Quadrans 210-175 BCE Herakles - Centaur SNG COP 272
Very cool ex Dataria coin, you have quite a number of his old coins. I like the green patina on this one, somewhat unusual for these Alexandrians. A Centaur biga is also awesome, that is just an all around sweet coin. Great to hear from you, hope your place gets back online soon. John
Nice! Not only centaurs, but GIANT centaurs. Look how enormous they are compared to little Domitian in his chariot.
You’re an inspiration to us TIF. You’ve come through tremendous adversity yet your love of ancient coin collecting has not faded.
Yeah... one of that type is on my wish list too. I have a Republican hippocamp biga though . ==> Wanna see it? (homage to stevex6 ) ROMAN REPUBLIC Moneyer Q. Crepereius M.f. D'OH! I have a Republican centaur biga too . How embarrassing that I forgot! ROMAN REPUBLIC, M. Aurelius Cotta 139 BCE AR Denarius, 20 mm, ? gm (can't find my scale right at the moment ) Obv: helmeted head of Roma right; X (mark of value) behind; COTA before; dotted border Rev: Hercules carrying a club, driving biga of centaurs right; centaurs each carrying a branch; M·AVRELI (AVR is ligate); in exergue, ROMA; line border Ref: Crawford 229/1b; Sydenham 429; Aurelia 16 formerly slabbed, NGC bulk submission holder, "VF" This was a good deal and I think it was overlooked by other coin amassers because it was slabbed and the letters on the slab weren't "AU" or "MS"
