I was going thru some coins and i found this penny. I know the photo is not that great but it looks like double die on letter D. Any help would be appreciated.
The 1988 Cent is a Copper Plated Zinc coin. What you are seeing is called DDD - Die Deterioration Doubling.. Nothing to do with a Doubled Die. By the way.. The correct numismatic terminology is Doubled Die and not double die.. Big difference.
The gentleman that your criticizing for helping you understand the correct terminology is also one of the most helpful and sharing persons on this forum when explaining errors to new collectors. Just sayin'
Try going out on a golf course and ask a golfer to toss you one of those "ball standy upper thingies".
Quote - "One of the first clues that you may be buying from someone who doesn’t know much about doubled dies would be when you see a coin being offered as a “double die.” The correct term is “doubled die”. On genuine doubled dies the doubling is on the die that strikes the coins, hence the term “doubled die”." closed quote From the Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties webpage - http://www.doubleddie.com/144801.html
I don't know if it criticizing as much as it was an observation. From the outside looking in, it wasn't an unreasonable question. It's just one of those things... you know, like "you better ax somebody".
