Hello everyone, was watching video's on coins today and I came across a video about a 1943 Non-silver plancet nickel. How do you tell if you have a non-silver coin? If it is the weight how much would this coin weigh? Thank you, & HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!
You'd almost have to do a composition test. Planchet weight is identical (5 grams). I've seen it claimed here that the specific gravity is higher for silver ones, 9.53 vs 8.92, but that would imply that the war nickels ran 5% or so thinner when first struck. I've never seen mention of that.
Put it under a metal detector. Nickels give a low tone. Silver gives a solid higher tone. Although I haven't put a war nickel under there. ( I will test that.) That composition may be a unique tone.
