So if somebody falls for a scam, it’s their fault?

In this case, I'd say yes. It was too easy not to be scammed in this situation.

A type collector can’t know everything, but they can easily know what PCGS and NGC are. If they choose to go it on their own with raw coins they don’t know especially when it’s of substantial value like that then this will keep happening.

Does that mean sellers should be doing that no it doesn’t. But beefer is right it’s too easy not to get scammed in cases like this where at some point bidders do need to take responsibility for what they’re doing.

A collector knows what he is buying, especially off the internet and with available resources. An in hand buy is a little different, and one should be willing to know they are taking a chance. (if in doubt)
But, an uniformed buyer in this day and age, It's plain ignorance, (excuse me) Last week I left a toned 79S 64PL Morgan in a NLF holder at a dealers shop. I thought it might be a rev of 78' and actually go DMPL. I am glad I did. 450 wasn't a bad price unless you feel that the holder was worth 75$. Point of the story, if, you are gonna buy something for that kind of money, you better do your homework.
By the way, I, absolutely love to cherrypick dealers that will try and deceive the buyer. Variety's can change a normal ordinary coin into extreme profit.

I attribute all of my early US stuff and know the difference between a lot of large cent subtypes (including head of 1793/1794, and I know the whole head shape is different, not just one curl). I guess I am not supposed to know that.

As for the coin in the OP, I know the buyer and told him he got scammed. I will forward this discussion.

You may want to let the buyer know that this is a good forum for him to ask questions and get opinions on potential purchases. Many people here will be willing to help.

Unfortunately there are lots of shady people in the coin business. I am sure we have all been reamed at some point in our collecting endeavors. Clearly the seller was a scammer. Having said that, buying raw coins above a certain value, you better know what you are doing.

I expect both ignorance and misrepresentation on eBay. It may not make it right, but is expected.

I reserve my anger for TPGs who are grossly negligent in their identification of what is in their holder.

With eBay, both caveat emptor and caveat vendor apply. You should know what you're seeing whether buying or selling.

Returns are automatic now. He should just be able to open a return and send it right back

I am just glad someone knew the buyer. This irks me like it does you Eduard. It is also one of the reasons I search heritage archives also when bidding or looking at a coin on ebay.

    Wrong or misleading such as

"please use to reference yourself that is truly is a 93 head. I don't claim to be an expert on Everything."

    Or

"you judge grade and confirm also if 93 or 94 or 95 head."

It sold for less than a true Head of 93 (even the most common one) would have, but considerably more than a head of 94 for this variety and condition would have. If you don't know what you are buying, and you buy it anyway, then yes I blame the buyer.

I know you will love this coin and its condition, one that you can send in for grading and wont come back details instead of a grade.

That’s wrong, I won’t love it and it’s also misleading, as the coin has multiple problems and probably won’t even grade if submitted to a basement slabber.
