It doesn't look like a cud to me. I'd need a better close-up to be sure. Note: I already clicked on it to enlarge it, but it isn't good enough.

To me it looks like a kind of Lamination. It seems to have peeled off the Wheat Stalk and move to the side and now it is hanging.

It appears to be coming up from the surface of the coin. Not on top of Mon Jan 01 20-03-03.jpg the surface.

    It's an interior die break,
    Nice one by the way.

That was my thought, too! Did you notice that there is a very fine crack to the southwest of the vacated space in the enlargement? That could be where the lamination peel began.

There is also a nice interior die break in the wheat, to the north, and what looks like a connecting die crack.
In fact it could be a Retained cud if there is a crack from the top of the wheat to the rim.

    Nice find!

Ope, I think that there is also a die break in the B on Obv. corresponding area.

Yes there is. Noticed that and then I looked at the reverse and saw the flaws. So what is the difference between a die crack and a cud?

A die crack can be anywhere on the surface, A die crack that is continuous and touching the rim at both ends has the potential to be called a retained cud.A cud and a retained cud are primarily the same thing, except a retained cud will only have partial loss of the die face, A cud will have full loss.

There are nice chips in the B in LIBERTY and off the top of the 1 in 1958, as well.

@Geezer509, can we get a sharp closeup of just the date?

Right Fast Eddie, hadn't noticed the date. Also how do you like the rare one of a kind Zombie Lincoln in my profile post? Severe environmental damage I'd say.:vamp:
