Sometimes I look at the effigy quarter and say (l to r, starting at the two above the other one) dog, horse, bird... because on the coin you can definitely make them into animal shapes. Or you can say it is an animal cracker quarter.

I don’t think the ATB issues have anything to do with the fact that it was repeating a special program, rather their issues are just the nature of the program itself. What I mean by that is that with the parks some are very popular like Hawaii, Grand Caynon, Gettysburg ect, but once the big parks were completed they were left having to do a lot of parks very few people know or care about. Then to compound the issue a lot of the parks are best represented with the generic nature scene with say a mountain some trees and maybe some wild life so a lot of them blended together. More recently they’ve tried to be more “creative” with the designs which has lead to some looking like it’s a coin for birds and having no clue what the park is just from the design or putting random people in that just look awkward ect.

It was going to be a hard series to do no matter what, but they haven’t been doing themselves any favors with a lot of their design choices

Maybe I’m a bit biased since I was born and raised in Iowa, but I kind of like the Effigy Mounds quarter. The texture is unique, even if it isn’t the most eye popping design out there.

As for ugliness, I think we’re forgetting just how hideous some of the state quarter designs were. The Wisconsin quarter with the cow and the piece of cheese particularly sticks out in my mind. Did they steal it from Farmers Only dot com? Also I have to give honorable mention to all of the designs incorporating their state’s outlines due to sheer lack of creativity. They would have been better off using the ATB designs for the first program and then doing something else, like historical figures or animals, after covering all the states.

It's a toss up between a circulated flowing hair and the Eunice Shriver commemorative

Of course not, and as you're well aware, other hacks have been endlessly lauded on this very forum. CT has a rather tolerant crowd after all...

I forgot to mention that one. I think it fell off the top of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down...

I’m stuck between the SBA dollar and the Eunice Shriver coin.

And while the Effigy Mounds quarter isn’t the best design by a long shot, I can’t fault the designer too much. They essentially had to portray piles of dirt after all.

You actually find Zincolns that have been buried? I would figure all you would find are the copper shells empty of zinc save for a little that hadn’t vanished yet. Kinda like a snake skin.

Oh boy, you’ve opened my can of worms. The US has made a lot of ugly coins. The US The obverse of the 2018 World War I commerative Coin. I wish the mint would just hire designers for these coins instead of holding contests. The obverse of the new Jefferson Nickel isn’t very appealing either. The pattern below is probably the most boring coin that’s ever be made in the United States. You can’t forget about the witch, I mean the 1792 Silver Center Cent. The Birch Cent isn’t pretty either! Sure the latter two coins are an important part of the history, but I don’t have to like them.

Yikes! That’s the first time I’ve seen this one. I was looking at the newest Red Book yesterday and noticed that modern commemorative mintages have been trending even lower recently. This one is a good example of why. The subject matter of many of them is not significant enough for national coinage, and even when there is something important like the 100th anniversary of the Armistice they manage to come up with a crappy design. @CoinBreaux hit the nail on the head recommending they ditch the contests.
