Nice low grade coin. I am think it is an S-196, but not positive. And I also believe the die was prepared as 179 without an ending date and then changed the 79 to 80. Too lazy to go dig out my books.
I’d call it a solid good and decent surfaces too. Not a ground find. Just honest circulation wear though a bit marked and scraped. I like it though. Always a favorite. I had a 1800/79 when I was 10-12 that disappeared when we moved
I also picked up one of these when I was around 12. Paid $2 but it was (and remains) porous and barely legible. Still have it in the same 2x2...
Eleven of them from six different obv dies. Four varieties are 1800/1798 (one obv die), the other seven varieties are 1800/179. Four varieties are very rare, one is scarce to rare, one is scarce and the other five are common. I agree it is S-196, the most common one. This is what a high grade ome looks like. Note you can see both points of the 7 at the top of the 8 and the very strong 9 inside the 0.
