You got some amazing coins in 17! All are beautifull, thanks for sharing! By the way, that Koson AV Stater was struck at the Olbia Mint.
WOW!! All are fantastic and the more I view them, the more I love them!! I can't seem to make up my mind which are my favorites except for that fantastic Brutus stater----the best I can do is place them in categories: all those terrific Flavians, the Athens owl and finally the Sybaris drachm ...
Thanks! Interested to know where you got that from. There are a lot of theories about these coins floating around. I think the most well thought out is from the link I posted on the original post but I'm always interested to hear more!
I got mine from Kunker Auctions, on their description they have Olbia as the mint City/ same for Gorny&Mosch/ Rauch/ CNG/Roma.... It seems Olbia was the mint for all Scythian coinage. They are still uncertain who ordered these coins struck/ some say Brutus/ others a Scythian King allied too Brutus named Kotison???? The best thing was that these coins were never used/ ended up buried/ found later in Romania in perfect quality. So that everyone can afford a mint state coin from the time of the Roman Civil War today! Hopefully, more intact hoards of rare Aurei will be found in years to come. Esp. the Gallic Empire issues from Postumus/Tetricus/Victorinus.....John
Yeah I've seen those dealers claim Olbia in their listings but that only works if you believe it's NOT Brutus who minted them. Personally I believe the ones with the BR monogram were minted by Brutus in his travelling mint and the ones without the BR are immitations. The metallurgical report is consistent with that theory. See the link below. How many more hoards are there to be found? For collectors sake I hope a lot! I need some Flavian gold in my collection! http://www.calgarycoin.com/reference/articles/koson/koson.htm
That is a great article, learned a lot, thanks for sharing it. I think your theory makes a lot of sense. Also nice to have a perfect FDC Koson AV Stater
WOW now that is one brilliant set of coins, all top quality and that gold Brutus is one of the best I have seen good weight to, Congrats on a great year.
