Was noticing the other day at the flea market some people had some coins (overpriced a bit but I won't go there ) and noticed a lot of them had the letters W.T.F on the 2x2s. I was wondering what this meant? Is it some sort of code? Just caught my curiousity. Thanks. Phoenix
Yeah, probably a dealer's code. Dealers write letters and/or numbers on the 2x2's to tell them how much they paid for a coin, when they bought it etc. It helps them jog their memories when someone makes an offer.
I'm guessing you guys are right. But it's like - hey, I can't BELIEVE the price on this coin... Isn't that how flea markets work?
If you ever see NG or NFG on gold, that means the gold is "no good". Often you will see these in dealer's cases on pieces like fake $3 gold and fake Indians, but they will only sell the coins for melt.
As already noted this is just one of the many codes used by dealers to tell them what they paid, how long they've had it, how much to sell for. Some dealers also sell coins on consinement and put the initials of the owner on the flip to keep track of selling someone else's coin. If you go to coin shows you would see codes like this almost all the time. Some codes are really extensive and some are on the front as well as the back of the 2x2's. Gets tuff with so many dealers now using the 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 inch flips. I ask most dealers what the codes mean and seldom get the answer. This is usually due to the possibility they purchased the coin some time ago for a small amount and now the grey sheet shows it much higher so they know with thier code they'll make a bigger profit.
