Yes this is comon and as @abuckmaster147 stated it's grease that filled the die in a localized area. You will also notice the mint mark is also partially filled. It's an error, but does't add any value. Check out this site for more information. http://www.error-ref.com/struck-through-smooth-viscous-material-grease-oil/
Okay @V. Kurt Bellman you got me wondering. Why is Marlin Perkins talking about science stuff he was a Zoologist are you feeling okay? I mean I’m concerned. I saw you being nice the other day then I saw you helping a Newb what’s next buddy? I’m scared........LOL Reed.
Ray I really like this coin. It’s such a clean error it’s looks like it was supposed to be dated 200. Next one on the list is a 199. Good hunting! Reed
Welcome to the neighborhood, Matthew! Your Lincoln cent is just the result of a grease-filled die. These are very common and aren't worth more than face value. However, if you have a scale and can weigh it, you can get a rough idea of the actual date. Copper pennies weighing 3.11gms were struck in 1980, 1981 and part of 1982. Zinc pennies weighing 2.5gms have been struck ever since. This thread is more than three years old, so there is no real need for you to post photos of your coin.
