Hello, so I’m new to this website so please forgive me if I do anything incorrect or out of line. For Christmas I received a state quarters map, and while I was going through quarters for it, I came across a District of Columbia quarter with a brownish/goldish side. Upon looking into it, I found results saying that it could be a missing clad layer quarter. I have not been able to weigh it yet, but from all the other things I’ve found online to check it’s authenticity, I’m leaning away from it being a legitimate missing clad layer and just being something else, but I wanted to post on here just in case anyone else thought otherwise. I’ll attach some pictures that will hopefully be helpful in finding an answer. Thank you.
That is not typical of a missing clad layer. It would be a darker copper color. Looks like it could of once been plated and only one side remains. Or just Environmental Damage to one side by a chemical.
I kind of figured it was environmental damage after inspecting it more, but the possible one plate remaining is interesting. Thanks for the reply.
If there were truly a clad layer missing, it would be completely reddish-brownish on one side, since it would be showing the copper core on one side, instead of a copper-nickel outer layer. Below is what a real one looks like. (Images borrowed from Sullivan Numismatics.)
PS- @RavioliSauce is a great username. I love ravioli and had some for dinner. (I'm more into the pasta and filling than the sauce, though.)
First, welcome to the neighborhood @RavioliSauce ! Like @lordmarcovan , I like your username, too! Here is what a coin missing a clad layer might look like before it ever reaches circulation. I found this in a Mint bag. Chris
One other of the same year/mm was found from the same source ($100 Mixed P&D), but the owner decided to sell his raw on eBay. It hammered for $555. Chris
Haha, thanks. I came up with it when I was 13 for an email address and I’ve been using it ever since. Sorry for taking so long to reply to this thread. I got emails at first, but when I didn’t get anymore I assumed that there weren’t any more replies. I like your name paired with your pfp.
