The 2001-dated Kennedy half dollars are available in two-roll sets (20 coins per roll), including one Philadelphia and one Denver mint mark coin roll. They are also available in bags of 200 that include an equal number of half dollars with Philadelphia and Denver mint marks. god you can see my confusion on this issue can't you..The U.S mint are freaking LIARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They claim these things went on sale April 12 2004. So if they had been selling them since 2001 why the press release in March of 2004??????????? I must be a freaking IDIOT for trusting what I read on their web site.... I am only going to trust my fellow forum members concerning Mint products from this day forward so I will be in the "Know" on these important issues.
No, they are not liars, there was such a press release issued in 2004. But nowhere in that press release does it say that they had never been on sale prior to that. You chose to interpret it that way. The mint issued that press release for one reason, to make the public aware that these coins were still available. But yeah, I understand why you were confused.
He may very well be partially right. I do not believe the 2001 halves were offered for sale in 2001, The way I recall it the mint sat on them for a few years hoping the Fed would change their minds and request them. It wasn't until they started offering the Sac dollars that were not made for circulation in roll sets that they started listening to the collectors and began offering the 2001 Kennedys as well. I've been searching the annual mint reports trying to determine when they were offered but so far I'm not having too much luck. They don't even mention the quarter rolls until the 2003 report and then there is no breakdown of what was sold I've been through the 2001 to 2004 mint reports now and they never mention the half dollar rolls (No mention of the Sac dollar rolls either and we know they were being sold.). I have tracked income listed from distribution of half dollars listed in the 2002 and 2003 report s, and they seem to fairly closely account for the number of 2002 and 2003 kennedys that were produced but would not account for for extra sales of 2001 halves. The 2004 report uses a differnt format and I'm still not sure what it shows. I found a listing in the 2001 report but it includes the 2001 halves that were shipped to the Fed so I can't determine if there is any profit from roll set sales.
Kind of sounds like all the CC Morgans (GSA)they found in the vaults about 40 years ago or so. Then there was the people standing in lines in the early 60's to get a 1,000 bag of silver dollars from the tresury dept. in Wash D.C. That when some of the rare date became not so rare because the bags were all unc dollars
Conder if I hadn't bought 4 rolls of each myself, in 2001, I might be tempted to believe you. And then there is my memory, which distnctly recalls seeing the coins available for sale on the mint's site every single year. Of course I also searched the mint reports and was able to find the information. Which is why I told the other gentleman he could.
