Are you sure it pmd and not some sort of struckthrough? If you look at the bottom of the obverse you can see that theres kind of a raised pattern that extends to the edge of the coin idk how you'd add texture like that to it post mint And If it was altered wouldn' there be a loss of weight? Not saying your wrong, just being a dreamer lol
I get what you are saying, but it's highly unlikely that this coin came from the mint in that condition. Note: the rev from 4-5 o'clock looks like it may have been held by fingers?? Interesting to say the least.
Some people might think that it was the result of a capped die, but I think they would be wrong. I think it has been dipped in some form of acid. Note how the reeded edge appears to be showing through on the obverse rim between 4 & 6 o'clock. It's PMD to me! Chris
An ASE is 31.103 gms with 31.101 gms silver (1 troy ounce). I would expect that the tolerance for a bullion coin would not allow anything short of a troy ounce of silver. Your coin is light. As others have said, it was soaking in an acidic solution and you lost 0.08 gms of silver.
Look how sharp the rim is and how there is still some original surface showing there. Looks almost like it originally was a proof......
Many people have thought this to be true, but even extremely worn coins do not lose that much weight. If you want to test this theory, weigh a perfectly good SAE, and then dip it in acid until it looks like the one in this thread. Yeah! Right! Chris
