I have to apologize for not posting pictures of my SS gifts yet. I've been busy with all the holidays and get-togethers, and for some reason when I would check in here at CT it wasn't showing me that there'd been any postings to this thread, so I thought I would be ok putting off my post. I still have to take photos, but my SS did a wonderful job researching me and got me some great gifts! First off was the copy of the Stump book on Pop Out Repousse Coins! I was floored to receive this. When I was researching these earlier this year, this was a suggested reference, but I couldn't find any available anymore. There was a Kickstarter for a new updated printing, and I contributed to that, but there was no guarantee it would be published, and so far I hadn't heard anything. So to receive a copy of the original was a fantastic surprise! Next I received a 1971 Proof set - another great gift. I have been searching for that reclusive 1971 high-grade cameo Kennedy to finish my set, and this coin is beautiful. Next, I received the 1965, 1966, and 1967 Special Mint sets... More great Kennedys, as well as one being my birth year! Next up, I received the 1 Peso and 50 Centavos from the Philippines, both from 1947. Very cool coins - I will have to research them further to learn more about them. And finally, I received a hand-written note from my SS saying I could have the bragging rights for the first Coin Talk SS gold coin - it appears to be a miniature gold Lincoln cent dated 1909-1982. I wish my vision were better that I could appreciate it more. I will try and get photos of everything up later - thank you again Secret Santa for such wonderful and generous gifts!!! Merry Christmas!
I love that everyone is getting such great numismatic gifts. Many of those coins are really intriguing. My new 1 Peso coin is cool and I have looked up the countries that issued pesos or issue pesos now. Since I got a Mexican Peso (large) a few year back, and now the Dominican Republic one, I think that having one from each country would be a nice little collection to put together. I can't wait to see the pics from those who have not yet shown theirs! I think this SS is one of the best year to year things I participate in. I know I mentioned that I purchased my recipient's gifts prior to knowing who it would go to, and there were two other years I simply went through my own collection and picked out a few things, so having such a variety of giving is one of the unexpected joys of this... sometimes a SS picks out something special they think the giftee would like, based on their interests, and sometimes the specialness is getting something you never thought you might be interested in but later, down the road, it does spark an interest in a new avenue of this great hobby! Also, I like that this SS, with the lower amount suggested as the base, allows all who want to participate to do so, because with this, one could basically find something for the 15.00 and then mail it out for less than a dollar or so. Pretty much anyone here can do that. I want to state that whether I receive something valued at 15.00, or something valued higher, the surprise and joy I get from having something new and either adding to a collection I have or giving me a new opportunity is the greatest thing. So Merry Christmas to all, and Carry On Collecting and Learning!
Hello all, I'm having trouble getting pics of my gift at the moment. (tablet issue) But I wanted to thank my SS for the gift I received. It is a 1961 mint set. I had no MS - Franklin's, now I have 2. They are very nice, as well as the rest of the coins in the set. Will post some pics when I'm able. Thanks Santa, and Kirk. Happy Holidays to all.
I'm going to post this again. Because it's AWESOME!!!! My Secret Santa was familiar with a small bit of my family's history. On the Obverse of this 1936 Rhode Island Commemorative Half Dollar is Roger Williams, meeting some Native Americans. This is my Wife's 9th and my kids 10th Great Grandfather. He was a Puritan who was expelled from the Massachusetts Colony for having religious ideas that were considered extreme and dangerous. He went on to found the Rhode Island and Providence Plantations Colony. He was a student of Native American culture, and an outspoken abolitionist. Roger Williams was widely known as the first advocate to oppose slavery in all English Colonies, and taught the importance of separation of Church and State. He had 6 children and lived to 79 years old.
Here are pictures of my SS goodies. All wonderful and will fill holes in my collection. The tokens are super neat and something I enjoyed looking into the places. The foreign coin has been giving me fits trying to Id. I like the size and the mystery has been fun! Well done and Thank you very much for the gifts!
Good morning everyone! It has been very busy this Christmas, and I am late to the viewing party, I wanted to say Thank You to my SSanta, for the gifts. From right to left, Silver. A 1924 Un Peso, It is gonna fit well in the Mexican Type set I have been putting together. A 1944 1/2 Rupee I really like the design and will have to do some more research to figure out what the dot means. There is an L in the spot of the (Dot). Next is a bone imitation Cowrie shell from the 3rd to 2nd millennia BC, Something from the dark side, as most know, I dabble in from time to time, and A 2017P Lincoln cent my first! Second row A proof 4/5ths set of 2010 quarters. The Hot springs has some pretty toning, and will find its place in the dansco. Next is an 1859 Canadian Success to the Fisheries token. This has 2 variety's, and 10 sub variety's. A coin from Zanzibar, it has balancing weights and measures on the obverse. Thanks again Santa for the Coins and Tokens, I will post better photos of these, as I do the research on them, probably in existing threads. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! I appreciate and like them all!
Looks like your biggish mystery coin is a brass 200-cash coin of the Chinese Republic, circa 1920s. I'm not terribly up to speed on this stuff, so I'm uncertain of the province, variety, and so on, but I can narrow your search a bit. It is at least similar to this one, if not identical. The one in the link is from Szechuan province, which gives me a sudden hankering for some Chinese food. Your pix, full size:
So aside from being up for a few hours in the morning I was asleep all day yesterday lol. Was it Christmas? I did manage to wake up for the Doctor Who Christmas Special though. Which was a pile of garbage. Gotta love being sick for the holidays!
thank you so much secret santa. your coins gifts made my day. I had some copper rounds until my ex-girlfriend walked away with my copper rounds. I loved the copper rounds. sorry for the very poor quality in pics from my very cheap phone camera. pictured are 5 copper rounds, 2009 P & D nickels from mint rolls, 2009 S proof from mint roll, 1963 Franklin half (very nice),2004 silver proof Washington quarter (super nice), and what appears to be a half roll buffalo nickels...I have not had time to go thru each buffalo nickel yet, but 1 stood out from the rest 1936 plain no mint mark (awesome). thank you for being so generous. I loved all of it. all though I collect most world coins it was refreshing to see U.S.A. coins again. seeing those buffalo coins has really peaked my interest into collecting some of those. Thank you so much. I hope you and your wife and family had a great christmas. on to the pics... 1 of my 3 cats Max wanted to say hi...
I always try to research my gifted to try and figure out what they may like, but am always worried that even though they say kind words about their gift, it may be just because they are trying to be polite. This has haunted me my whole life and in years when I couldn't afford to give much, it is so depressing. I tell all my family not to buy me anything, and if they insist, the thing that makes me happiest are things that they make themselves for me. My oldest daughter makes me a batch of cookies every year, even though I tell her how much I love the gift, I really wonder if she believes me. I hope that she does, because it is one of my favorite gifts of all time. My Santa sent me a very nice letter and with the words that they wrote, I kind of got the feeling that they may feel a little as I do this time of year. Santa did his research and picked a gift that he/she thought that I might like, but to try and insure my happiness, they added to it. Santa's own words stated that this coin: "was there to Ensure that I enjoyed my gift. This coin alone was enough to make me happy. Then there was this one. There isn't much, numismatically speaking, that bears the name of my home state, but I try and collect anything that does. This set fits the bill and again I would have been thrilled to have just gotten it. Little did Santa know, when I opened my gift, the first thing that I saw, had me grinning from ear to ear and more than made my CT Christmas. I absolutely love these. After I got my first one of these, I had it on my desk and showed it off to my grandkids. Now everywhere they go, they bring me one back. Why do I love them so much? Who knows exactly, but I can guarantee a big part of why is because when it was made, someone was thought of to give it to. Then there is my favorite and the one that I saw first. And to boot, Santa gave me an uncirculated silver dime, so I can make my very own. Sorry no photo I reached the max. Thank you Santa!!!!!
This describes me to the letter. I always want to give more than I can give, but times can be tough. Things have been better this year, and it turned out to be one of the most blessed Christmas' I've ever had. It's been busy and the anxiety level has been peaked for the last two weeks. I was very happy to see that my recipients gift was received before Christmas and I hope they are happy with it. It has been posted on here. Speaking of Secret Santa, mine just arrived today in the mail. I just picked it up from the mail box. I have not opened it, but I see it came from way up North and had to make a trip through customs. The package is from Canada and that really has my interest peaked!! I've been developing an affection for Canadian coins over the last year or so. I have not bought any and I don't know what's in the present, but if it's Canadian, I will be VERY HAPPY, if not, I will still be HAPPY. I will open it later this evening after dinner and some chores are done. I will then take some photos and post them here sometime tomorrow. Merry Christmas everyone!!!
Mine arrived today and I opened it tonight. It's currently in acetone because that's the first thing I do
