We recently had a really good discussion about it, but the thread seems to have *poofed*.

Highly unlikely they were struck by the U.S. Mint.

Here is 1 of 20 types struck by the Bureau of the Mint for President Dwight. D. Eisenhower. Check out the recently uncovered documents in this video.

Whether it was "good" depends on one's point of view. But yes, we do remove posts that violate our "no politics" rule.

You may not be familiar with the difference between reporting news and commenting. That CNN story has an "Opinion" tag. Oh, and it even has a link, right in the first text line, to the very same Washington Post story that you linked to. Now you may of course discuss the design of that medal, but please do take the political debate elsewhere ...

I am curious to know where the Donald Trump item was made. Does anyone have that information?

I have a Richard Nixon one that was struck by the Franklin Mint in Philadelphia. It is almost three inches in diameter, making it bigger than Donald Trump's.

I edited the news stories out. It should be obvious that it is political and discussion is not allowed. If you want to do so, search the original stories out and post on their forums not here. If you want to know more about it as a physical token, the info should be there also.

    Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

The US Mint got political with its new Lady Liberty coin. Its been entertaining reading threads about it here. I dont know how to respond about it without going into a grey area. So here is my only mention of it.

Political discussions are feasible on many forums, and best to them. Luckily the owners saw fit to not allow them here.

If the thread turned political, I didn't see it. The last time I looked at it, it was a discussion of challenge coins and their function. There was a discussion of Trump's coin, but it was largely unpolitical. It may have turned ugly while I wasn't watching.

I understand the no-politics rule, but that wasn't where the thread was when I last saw it.

Yeah, I definitely understand OP-ED pieces. The problem was, the OP didn't. That's what he posted (and seemed to refer to as fact). The link was an incredibly biased political hit-piece, and I was trying to post a more factual analysis of the situation. I think Wa-Po did a good job of describing the challenge coin and its context, which is why I linked to it. In today's polemic environment, you can't discuss the design of the medal without including your pre-conceived notions about the designer of the medal.

Honestly, you should probably just poof this thread as well. Clearly there is no way to discuss any current event without being political or offending anyone.

It is a sad state of affairs, but it's true.

Yep, there is no clear "dividing line" between discussing such medals and a political debate, so there will in many cases be some kind of leeway. Sometimes it makes more sense to edit single posts, sometimes taking the entire topic out "is" better. Why the inverted commas? Because the team of moderators is not a monolithic block either. :)

Now Doug made and makes sure that our decisions and other actions are consistent and not arbitrary, but in some specific situation, Mod A may say nah, this has taken a political/religious turn that is against the rules, while Mod B may say that the point has not been reached. In fact, I even reported my own post (#4 above). In the context of these medals, it is perfectly OK to discuss the composition for example, or - once that becomes known - who designed and produced them. Let's see where this one goes.

Right, these are not coins. But many mix the terms "coin" and "medal" up, and so the term challenge coin apparently got stuck. :)

My earlier responses were political and removed and I do apologize for posting them since this isn't the point of this forum. My question here is that should something like this even be considered a topic for a coin forum since technically these aren't coins or, IMO, medals?

I was more interested in how/who made it, designed, composition, etc. Though the only reference I could find of it was the one specific link. I even searched cointalk and found nothing (probably becz it was removed as mentioned). But with that one collector having one, I figured it was available somewhere ...

Exonumia, including medals, love tokens, civil war tokens, etc. has been a part of the forum as long as I know, so we try to allow it ,as long as it deals with the article itself, and not discussing the areas of politics , religion,or world events. Those areas have been removed to Peter's site WWW.partisanlines.com, where it is allowed and encouraged. But very few post there regularly. But if one wishes to discuss the politics involved with any item or situation , that is where one needs to go. With the large number of regulars here 44,000 , there will be some who wants to get in their viewpoint of politics or religion and forget where they are, and we may have one less member. Some have asked to have threads almost 10 yrs old to be removed as they feel differently now, but the rule is ...No, it stays. So take a little time after composing the post to re-read it and see if it might cause you trouble. If 'maybe',then alter it. this forum has a large variety of people, and some just find us by google and post like they post on twitter or something, and that is often contrary to what is allowed. Have a nice holiday. The Grinch.

Challenge coins have long been a collectible, much like other medals and tokens. Originally military in origin, law enforcement and EMT services also often use them. I have an extensive collection of challenge coins... from many sources. The coin that started the thread was privately funded.
