I designed the fabric but sent it to Spoonflower.com for printing. I’ve used them many times (including some ancient coin fabric). The have a good selection of base fabrics and reasonable prices. Looking forward to seeing what you dream up! I haven’t checked my sewing machines to see if they survived the hurricanes (terribly high humidity, salt, etc). After the holidays that is high on the to-do list.
imho, @dadams , If you happened to be the SS of the coin, I would be interested in hearing it as we have heard many on both side of the issue. Maybe it really was a general question?
What kind of machines do you have? I have two Berninas and I believe at least one of them was actually made in Switzerland. Ooops...do not mean to hijack the thread. Better leave this to another time and place. Will PM you fabric designs re coins when I dream up some.
I think de-slabbing in your case is totally justifiable. Coins in slabs are more easily sold to coin shop dealers and non-experts. If you plan to keep the coin in your collection, I think you should free it and make it feel at home. I personally, have 2 complete collections of Judaean coins. One is slabbed and one is not. My 2 collections are kept in different rooms so they won't fight with one another. Happy Winter Solstice, everyone!
That is a great Titus denarius with a nice reverse design and a great left facing bust. I would bust him out of coin jail.
I can personally vouch for this statment. The shards are sharp and the fly in all directions at a high rate of speed. I have been glad I was wearing my glasses more than once.
If you stand the slab on the long edge and whack it a time or two, the seam fails and you can open it like a book— no shards, no missiles
I use a couple methods: 1) put in Vise and turn till a breaking sound, as the sonic weld on the slab fails. Should you have a bench vise; 3-5 twists on the long and short sides, the sonic weld-seam just pops and it opens like a book! https://www.cointalk.com/threads/alegandron-had-a-slam-dance.268286/page-3#post-2257470 If you have a Vise, and you want to free a coin from a slab; I found putting the slab length-wise (both on end and on side), then slowly turn the handle. You will hear the slab crack and it will bow a little. Then change sides, and slowly turn again. It will crack and bow. Afterwards, the slab will easily come apart! NIRVANNA! Freed Ancient! This is the EASIEST method that I have found! OR 2) a 2lb. hammer: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/alegandron-had-a-slam-dance.268286/ Behold... FREEDOM! I just captured a great Quinarius from 97 BCE... and my 2 lb. Hammer had a SLAM-DANCE with the dreaded Slab! Freed from captivity, freed from tyranny, and there was slam-dancing in the streets! Roman Republic AR Quinarius 97 BCE 15.3mm, 1.62g Moneyer: C. Egnatuleius C F Obv: Laurel Head of Apollo r., C EGNATULEI CF behind (NAT and VL in monogram) Q below Rev: Victory standing l., inscribing shield attached to trophy at foot of which is a carnyx, Q below in central field, ROMA in ex. (Duplication of Q on Obv and Rev suggests that they are intended as a value - Quinarius, instead of a V; as well as designation of the issuer as Quaestor.)
This was one of those times when I wished CT had a "Really, really like" button! Perhaps I will write to the administrators and send a little extra contribution when I suggest it.
The slab has a date with death this weekend! I will wear proper protective gear and safely free Titus.
I am not the giftor (if that is a word) of @GerardV 's coin and perhaps I should not have pondered my own dilemma here. Part of me wants to stay anonymous as I seek no praise, but the other part of me knows first hand the agony of wondering "who". Since my own SS came clean I suppose I must too.
@dadams - I came clean to my SS recipient via a PM. Not for my own praise, but because two CTers helped me due to my inexperience with the likes and dislikes of people here. It was important to me that the two CTers got the credit they deserved. Doing it via a PM meant it stayed private. If the recipient wants to post the info, then it's up to him/her. But, I made sure not to out myself to everyone. And, for the record, if someone wants to ponder their own dilemma in a thread I started, they are more than welcome. After all, these are CT threads, not GerardV threads.
@Deacon Ray, I was looking at this snowflake. It looks handcrafted. Did you cut out that snowflake with a scissors? It is amazing if you did.
I did that artwork last year but I really can't remember if I cut out the snowflake or not. I think I did—I used to have fun making them with my young nieces when I was visiting.
