There are scratches on them, I have seen some with scratches that have been graded, don't know if they will grade this one. Any thoughts?
I agree it have been cleaned, how did the scratches occur? What kind of cleaning causes scratches? Tissue or cleaner? It have been graded by ANACS, but ANACS label doesn't say it's cleaned, under higher magnification, there are lots of scratches. I can post picture with greater detail of scratches
The cleaner didn't cause the scratches. It was circulated then cleaned. The scratches were aquired in circulation.
I too would like to see a picture of the slab as I have some concerns about that coin. But to answer your question, I doubt that NGC or PCGS would slab it, but because of its rarity they just might make an exception.
I must say that I am really surprised that that coin was not net graded by ANACS. It has obviously been harhsly cleaned and generally just beat half to death.
I was contacted yesterday by an employee of Heritage regarding this coin - 1893-S. But since it would be considered to be self-promotion for a Heritage employee to post here on the subject, I am doing it for him. Also, to the original poster ML94539, this message is for you and your benefit. " - there is a link to one of our auctions and the buyer asks if the coin will cross to NGC/PCGS." " I can guarantee that our internal staff of graders didn't think so. Basically their job is to find the coins that will upgrade or cross, so that we don't leave any money on the table (good for us and our consignors). This coin sold for 8600 and if slabbed by PCGS or NGC it would have sold for 11-12k. That is a big enough jump that we would have tried to cross it if possible. The fact that it isn't in a PCGS/NGC holder means it either didn't cross or crossover wasn't attempted (because our graders think it would have been wasted money)." ".....I just don't want him to crack it out of that slab as he would be giving money away if he did. I don't think he overpayed all that much, but if he cracks it out he may have to invest a fair bit of money trying to get it back into a holder." Now, ML94539 - I hope you take this message to heart. You paid a good deal of money for this coin that is already slabbed. And I completely agree that it would be a huge mistake and total waste of money if you were to try and have this coin re-graded by NGC or PCGS. I myself am 99.9% certain that neither of them will grade this coin. And you have already heard the opinion of the folks at Heritage. So it is your decision to make, but that is the best and most honest advice I can give you.
Here is a 1893-S on E-bay up to 5,500 and not slabbed. He calls it 1893-S Morgan Dollar Rare High Grade AU Details! 1893S link http://cgi.ebay.com/1893-S-Morgan-D...yZ139811QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
he/she could still try to cross it to pcgs/ngc in slab [without cracking it; but, lessens the chance of crossing while lowering your risk if it were liberated] and hope to cross at 45 or lower. due to the ''status'' as a rarity, they may try to cram it in to one of their holders. if it does get in to pcgs/ngc i would flip it back on heritage during one of their signature auctions and take that money and buy a nice vf-xf that hasn't been boinked with.
