My second ancient will never be sold: There are several from the Bag o Romans (like the first one I identified properly) plus the gifts from @Sallent @Victor_Clark and @jamesicus are never going to be sold. I might gift them to a new ancient collector, however, as a way to honor their dedication to growing the number of collectors.
Some I wouldn't sell for double or triple what i paid... But I would sell any coin if I was offered a big enough pile of money
..to date, i've not sold ANY of my coins... i've gave a few away as gifts. i threaten, think and talk about it.. but so far, it's just been boxer talk.
Thanks for the coin praise @lordmarcovan There are a very few things I could do that would earn me the death sentence from my wife, and letting go of that coin ranks pretty high up there. She has no interest in the hobby, but still likes to look at that tet. Ill post the tet to the CirCam thread this evening. On an unrelated note, are you still in possesson of the hat and vest with holed coins? I've got a medieval English penny that meets the requirements and can think of no better place for it.
Thanks. Yes and no. I still have the hat and vest in my closet, but sold the collections of coins off of them in my "Great Purge of 2013". My collection has been wiped out and rebuilt at least three times in the last 41 years, so I have learned some detachment, and I'm not as allergic to selling stuff as some people are. The holey medieval does pique my curiosity.
I guess I am still where @dougsmit used to be. I do not sell coins. I give them away to people, but I buy coins with play money and consider the money wasted when I buy a coin with it. Therefore, in my mind they have no value. The only time I sold coins was when my wife was at a coin deal with me. I told her I would only keep the best 100 and sell off the rest. Unfortunately she held me to this statement. She no longer goes on coin deals with me.....
My collection has evolved from US to World to Ancients. As I’ve changed focus I become more willing to part with coins from older interests but I still have a lot in each category plus exonumia that I wouldn’t want to sell. It might just be that it’s my current love but there are very few of my ancients that I would sell. Everything has a price but if I don’t hear any offers, then I don’t have to worry about it.
I have around 700 AV coins that I would NEVER sell, these are all mint state quality. I have another 120 that I would like to upgrade to mint quality, so I would sell those. Here are three of the 700 that will always be in my collection. One ancient, second medieval, third baroque era....John
My earlier response was kind of a cop out so I thought I’d show a concrete example. It’s not an ancient but this is a coin I find fascinating for the life it lead rather than the coin itself. It’s a large silver coin with great details but someone scratched across it to “cut the throat” of the king’s image. That the king’s head was actually removed only 3 years after this coin was minted makes you wonder when was the coin defaced? It wasn’t a coin of the common man so what was the status of the owner? Numismatically, this coin is ruined so there’s no point in selling it but as a piece of history I think it’s priceless.
I do not usually sell my coins. I sent a few to JA to get rid of as I had upgrades for those. I get much more satisfaction out of gifting those coins that I feel need a good home.

I never sell coins that were gifts. But here are some special purchases that I will never sell: My favorite coin. I love the Wang Mang period, and these unfinished counterfeits tell a fascinating and dark story. And this coin came from my girlfriend. I was short on cash at a We Buy Gold shop, so she stepped up and gave me a few dollars to make the deal go through. She refused to let me pay her back. It was a day filled with very good memories.
Yes, one often has to buckle one's seatbelt and put on goggles before looking at a panzerman post. He should post warnings before he drops that kind of stuff into a thread and throws everything else into the shade.
Play money is the only money anyone should spend on coins. If you can't find better long term investments for the retirement funds you need to hire an adviser. The definition of play money may change if, for example, you decide you want to pay for medical bills or if you no longer like the coins as you did once. The fact is that your view on such things can change with time. I started selling off coins in the realization that I am getting weaker and will not be able to pick up 65 pounds of coins forever and will not feel up to checking so many for bronze disease etc. forever. Coins that I won't handle and books that I won't read are less thrilling than they once were. I'd rather see them go to someone still in the phase where the coins are appealing. I can't see just giving them away to people who claim interest because they want free hand outs so we sell some and give others to people we believe will appreciate them (in other words, not dealers and investors). This is the greatest help in not selling coins. Everything may have its price. Would I sell my whole collection for $100 million. Probably but would $100 million change my life for the better? It could have fifty years ago but now? Am I likely to get an offer on one million? Highly unlikely. In the most true words of H8, "Then I don’t have to worry about it."
" "Then I don’t have to worry about it." Yet somebody will and I hope plans are made to relieve that worry.
