Could someone get in trouble for this? Pre release Madisons

I may have already said too much.. I'll just erase the post if so .. long as no one QUOTES the text :/

I was at the bank and I asked about wyoming state quarters (they get them late always) and the gal says "no, but we have the new gold dollars" so I take them and to my suprise they are MADISON. Nov-15 is the release date.

I'll take a dozen and mail them to myself in a clear express envelope so the postmark is tomorrow..(I can send them to a PO box in the same 20x12 postoffice!) but I was thinking that someone else might want in on the deal.. so I thought I'd try an epay auction.

Can the bank get in trouble for this if some federal folks catch the auction and call me? I'm not in a position to lie to the feds so I'll give them up right away.. but they're nice folks who just made a mistake.

Am I thinking too much? should I go ahead and list them? I won't if someone can possibly get hassled.

If I fedex them to PCGS what designation do you think I can get? (edit: early release or first day of release only, they say. Early release isn't really "prior to release date" it's just "later than first day" of course.)

No one? Any opinions on how silly the auction idea is? I have nothing else to do...

I would write and send one to CoinWorld....try to call and ask for Beth....ask if she would be interested in getting one of these before the release date for an article like Numismatic News had for the Washington Dollars. I'm sure she would be and might even pay your postage cost to mail one to her.

I got several rolls of the Jefferson Dollars a full two weeks early. A friend of mine listed some of them on eBay with a next day shipping option. No one showed any interest.

About the only place left that I think you will find any interest is if you can find a coin show this weekend and walk around selling full unopened rolls. say $30 per roll??

The bank won't get in trouble per se, but if the Mint finds out, they will be barred from receiving any early release products in the future prior to the official release date. I've seen it happen. One of the banks I work with cannot even order presidential dollar coins prior to the official release date.

ooh.. okay, that's good enough for me.. I don't want to be "that person". It's only 2 rolls. Not worth the potential hassle. I'll box a roll and ship it to myself, and do a half dozen clear envelopes. Maybe in 40 years they will be more interesting.

Theres the Baltimore show on the 15th near me. maybe I'll being a couple of my postmarked envelopes with me as conversation pieces.

    Good nuff.. thanks all.

PS Speedy I'll try that now. thanks.

Yeah I think you would do good to contact Beth. She is a really nice lady from what I've seen.
I also think if you ask she would be more than happy to keep your name, location, and such info about the bank undercover. Its worth a try at least.

I used the web-form to send a message. She may see it monday I guess. I offered to send one of my postmarked packages but it would probably get opened for photos. Still.. this type of release has happened, and will probably continue. I hope they find people with other cases.. I would be interested to read how often it has happened and what the penalties are. I refferenced CT but not this thread. Gatzdon's experience counts as an incident.. I wonder how many others there are.

BTW, I have a few sheets of FOREVER STAMPS in a package hand-cancelled the day before their first use... but someone would have to beleive me.. because it's sealed and windowless haha. I dropped like 80 bucks worth of superhero, and other stamps in there. In retrospect that was a serious mistake... but it has comedic value.

Het in touch with Ken Potter - coin dealer. If you sent these to a grading service BEFORE issue date, they might slab them as pre-release. Ken sells Jefferson dollars that were slabbed as pre-release.

I actually called PCGS. The lady that answered the phone said no. I beleived her. It has happened to me before though.. I get a person on the phone who does not know the correct answer, and I move on and later hear "oh, the receptionist should have passed you to a technician sorry" well..that doesn't turn the clock back.. and these days you can't assume the person answering the phone is a receptionist. They don't really like it when you ask to speak with an engineer.. when they ARE an engineer.

I'll email Ken now. Thanks for the tip! I was just finishing up the PCGS forms for first-day. maybe I'll keep a couple in reserve and see what Ken says.

    Thanks.

OH PS I went through a roll of 25 and found 2 (pcgs scale)ms65's(a guess) and 1 with a reverse die-chip above the "R". The rest were all nomal.

Well the trail towards "pre-release" grading leads me to the homepage of pcicoins http://www.pcicoins.com/ which says that the signature series, by the CEO exists.. but the CEO no longer is employed there. I'll wait for Ken's advice.

I notice some pre-releases on ebay too. just 4 from the same person. I'm not tempted no worries. "I like coins better than money" (R) ;)

Wow, and I just read on PCGS site that they do not accept "first day of issue" outside of their BULK SUBMISSION program (100+!) I don't have 4000 bucks to spare on grading. Expensive to escalate this hobby. I think I'll save it for that Gutenberg leaf I've wanted instead.

PCI is, shall we say, a little liberal with their policies. I am sure they will slab early release, and will be cheaper than PCGS (obvioulsy) had PCGS agreed to do it. But...you need to get them postmarked prior to issue date.

Hope it works out - might as well add some extra value to them if you can.
