Oh, I totally get what you mean about having an "OC heart". Took me a long time to "declutter", as you call it (hadn't heard of that book). It took a major purge in 2013 and a sea change in my collecting philosophy to transition to this "set" which follows no predetermined set structure.

Really, ALL of these spoke to me for one reason or another, but I'll need to give another glimpse at my various watchlists again. There's much more on my radar. @Numismat pointing out that I lack anything from South America was a "whoa" realization. (Wish I hadn't sold that Peruvian cob now.) I have to fix that!

And I need a dated QE1 6d, whether the one above ends up being "it" or not. (You made an excellent point about perhaps holding out a bit longer for an even nicer one, though this one is, as mentioned, very tempting.)

I need something from India, too.

And a Conder token (Atlas has some nice ones).

    And a Caballito peso ...

    And ...

The list goes on endlessly. LOL

Your eclectic box is a carefully curated thing of beauty so I can understand @Stork s' reasoning that you might want to wait for a better portrait but this piece seems like a pretty reasonable deal at under $100. I have been searching for a nice and reasonably priced Elizabeth sixpence (admittedly not super hard) because I have the tacit approval to spend wedding funds on a sixpence because of some rhyme or other that deals with blue things and sixpences (score). I think if this were on CNG it would go for $100+.

I think none of the 3 are up to the standards you have set for your "20". Continue saving for better.

Loved coin B, until I saw the graffiti on it... And it kind of resembles a swastika... Whatever it is, coin B will not get a straight grade...
I then look at A - the reverse is wonderful with the shield and all - but the image edges kind of have me questioning if the coin was clipped. It's a 20% chance considering it's just an image. You already have an error, coin C is really nice - but in 25 coins, I'd think there is room for only one error coin :)

I would get the Stettin coin/ my Mother's side of our Family come from there. One thing good about being self employed....when the coin $ runs low, you can always make extra cash. Last Winter, I shovelling snow off clients roofs @$600 a roof/ I was able to clear 3 in a eight hr day/ hence I made enough to bid/win a Mint state 1855 Victoria YH Shield Sovereign:happy: I want to get a mint state AV Dukat from Stettin in 2018!

Do like B, but went with A. They should all come with a side of bacon.

I find B to be the most interesting. A is very cool also.

I'm going to PM you a link to where the QE1 sixpence is for sale. Like you, I think it's a great grab at the price, but I'm going to hold out for a better example, when funds permit. So have at it, if you like. LMK if you buy it. I think you should. I was, as mentioned, quite tempted, because I'm a sucker for that sort of grey toning and I think the portrait is decent on that one, despite the moderate wear.

(PS- if understand correctly that you have a bride who might be willing to put a sixpence in her shoe, as per the proverb, I'd go with an Elizabeth the Second coin, or perhaps a Victorian silver one. I'd be scared to have even a dainty bride step on a 400-year-old hammered coin, for fear of breaking it!) :nailbiting:

Maybe I'll find a 1565-dated coin. I'm a '65 model from a different century, so getting something from 400 years before my birthyear would be fun, particularly if I can nail one with the right look. (In other words, like this one, with the grey toning and a good portrait, but higher grade, and dated 1565.)

Still considering the Pomerania-Stettin griffin and the o/c error coin, but I've also been talking behind the scenes with a fellow CT member about one of his coins, which I might make a move on instead. I'll post pics of that here if he approves.

I did buy this tonight. ;)

    Price was right.

Looks like I won't get hired as a product photographer, but I do have some qualifications as a Philly Sammich Taster, so there's that.

(And this one was tastier than it looks in the photos. *burp*) :hungry:

    Mmm... nice greasy yumminess! LOL

OK, I have done some hard thinking and I have made up my mind.

Will it be Coin A, Coin B, or Coin C?
    • I've decided to pass on Coin A (the English sixpence). I like it, but will hold out for a bit higher grade example (even though that's certain to cost more). I have PM-ed a link to @Curtisimo, in case he wishes to buy it. If he does, I will certainly approve, as I was strongly tempted on that one.
    • I'm keeping Coin B (the Pomerania-Stettin doppelschilling) in my watchlist and may move on it at another time. I've had it bookmarked for nearly a year anyway, so it might not be going anywhere anytime soon. If I come up with another hundred bucks, I might still grab it later.
    • Ditto for Coin C (the off-center German pfennig). It too has been on my radar a long time and I might still make a move on it in the future. Or not. We'll see.
Nay rather I have decided to pursue the as-yet-unposted and undescribed Coin D. This belongs to another CoinTalk member and was posted in a recent thread of his. The more I have looked at it and discussed it with him, the more enthusiastic about it I have become.

For now, I'll let you guess at which other member's thread this mysterious Coin D was posted in. When I hear back from him and we seem to have reached an agreement, I will post it here, with his permission. For now I will mention that it is about as expensive as all three of the poll coins combined, but he's offering me a good price and might also take some barter as part of the deal, so since I sold some love tokens recently I should be able to make this one happen.

Stay tuned for the revelation of my latest newp, when that happens. Probably soon. :)

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

I love the toning on the second one. I'd pass on the Elizabeth - it's just too low grade. I think it would look out of place with your other treasure.

Plus, how could you pass up a griffin?

I did. I passed on the Lizzie. But perhaps @Curtisimo will go there.

I'm passing on the Griffin and the other coin, too, but perhaps only temporarily. Those remain in my future "maybe" pile, with the little toned griffin being a pretty strong "maybe" at that.

No, I went with an unmentioned fourth coin we can now call Coin D, which I have not posted yet. I wanted to drum up a tiny bit of suspense, first.

    Anybody wanna see it? ;)

I'll probably post it in the wee hours of the morning, in my downtime at work.

In the meantime, I did post a tiny spoiler button in my previous reply above.

Here is Coin D. My last major purchase for 2017.

It is coming from @H8_modern, who discussed it here.

    pz91eb.jpg iiyz3R.jpg hJzXYg.jpg 9P9LYG.jpg

It is costing me in the neighborhood of what all three pieces in the poll combined would have, and I'm paying him five times the dirt-cheap lowball offer he got from a dealer, and yet I'm still satisfied with the price. Essentially I'm getting this for VF25-ish money.

I have long been a fan of the type. Love that little kid on the stick horse.

Back some years ago, I had one of these on my old Holey Coin Vest. It was one of my favorite "holey" coins.

These "Steckenreiter-Klippe" pieces were made shortly after the Thirty Years War. The war ended in 1648 when the peace treaty was signed in Münster (today in the state of NW) and Osnabrück (today NI). Afterwards, in 1649/50, the further details were negotiated at the Friedensexekutionshauptrezess :) in Nuremberg (Nürnberg, today BY). Octavio Piccolomini was the leader of Ferdinand III's imperial delegation.

It is said (folk tale in German here) that one day several little boys on hobby horses came to him and asked him for a peace souvenir. Piccolomini replied that he was not prepared for this but that they should come back a week later; he would then give them something. The next Sunday even more kids came, and Piccolomini gave each of them of these klippes that he had made. Hard to tell how many were actually made in that year, and how many were minted later; most of them are silver pieces but there are also some in gold.

In Osnabrück, by the way, the Steckenpferdreiten is an annual custom, started in 1948. This was the 300th anniversary of the Westphalian Peace (25 Oct 1648), and also shortly after WW2. Since then, every year more than 1,000 schoolchildren (mostly 9 year old) on hobby horses have come to the city hall on 25 October. And while the Osnabrück Peace Day is mostly about peace, interreligious dialog, migration and integration, they will at the end get a ... nah, not a klippe but a sweet pretzel. :)
