Those are some amazing coins @Theodosius Congratulations on a great year. My personal favorite is the Eukratides tetradrachm, it is one of my top dream coins for Greeks. Out of curiosity, how was it determined that the Punic tet was a fake? The coin looks amazing to me, and I would never suspect it, though I'm not that familiar with them. I hope your health issues clear up and you are fit as a fiddle in 2018.
Wow, John, each and every coin was a fun read, and a stopping point as I was enjoying your post. You have an excellent eye, and it is fun to see a serious, non-Roman collector with some very nice coins. I cannot tell which is best to me, rather, I would truly enjoy having any in my collection. I stopped at your Punic Tet, thinking how badly I want one because of my focus on Carthage. However, was wowed that Stephan Batelle was great for the return! Faith in great Sellers!
I had traded the punic tet to James Beach for a Syracuse tet. He had it in his trays and someone from ngc stopped by and was suspicious of its style. Turns out it is a match for a known transfer die. They all have the corrosion pattern on the horse head.
Thanks for pointing that out. I plan to study this coin more and try to get a better set of pictures. John
What a great year you had! So many exceptional coins... the Maroneia, the Pharsalos, the Tarentum... wow!
Thanks everyone for the nice comments! Coin collecting was definitely the bright spot in my life last year. Most of these were bought at shows or within hours of being posted on vcoins or Forum. A few came from auctions but Clio tends to like the same things as me.
So much detail in those coins. The horse's mane on the Calabria Tarentum coin is just one example of really elegantly engraved dies and a fine collector's eye.
Wow!!! Those are amazing!! Congrats on some great coins! It's hard to pick a favorite but have to say the Macedon Roman Protectorate is a type that I would love to have and yours is very nice!!
Here's what I said while scrolling down.... "Oh Sweeeeeeeet!" "Oh Sweeeeeeeeeeeeet!" "Oh Sweeeeeet!" "Oh Sweeeet!" "Oh Sweeeet!" "Oh Sweet!" "Oh Sweet!" "Oh Sweet!" "Oh Sweeet!" "Oh Sweeeeet!" "Oh Sweet!" "Oh Sweeeeeeeeeeet!"
Pretty much echos my sentiments. THIS first one made my little heart go pitter-patter. As if the stunning horsie weren't enough, those rambling grapevines just blew me away. (I've always loved grapes on coins, for some reason.) I totally LOVE it. Perhaps even more than the next one I've mentioned below, and that's sayin' something. I believe I already expressed my extreme admiration for this one in another thread. Wow. No, scratch that. Should have read, WOW. And the Baktrian is very handsome. I should get me one of those someday. That's something I haven't dipped my toe into yet. I'd be proud of any of 'em, really. I hope your health improves and 2018 is even more fulfilling for you.
Thanks Robert. I was really blessed with coins in 2017 and I have reason to hope my health will improve in 2018. John
