Ok guys, I am sure I will get ridiculed and laughed at for this. I have been looking at these worthless 1oz. copper rounds for awhile. I just ordered a few that look similar to Morgan and Peace dollars, Buffalo Nickle, Mercury dime, and a $20.00 St Gaudens. Why, you may ask? 1. I am old and like shiny, blingy, big coins. 2. I am old and thought they are rather Purdy. 3. I am old enough to realize they have no value. 5. I am old enough to realize they are a waste of my money, but very little money. 6. I am old and have time, so now I can get out my semi-chrome polish and shine them up every now and then, not like my real silver coins. 7. I am old and stupid. 8. I am old enough to realize these are not real coins. 9. I am old enough to not have to worry about them going up in value. They won't. 10. I am old enough to know that I like these better than collecting post cards like some do. 11. I am old enough to know these will not have any impact on my real coin collecting. 12. I am old enough to know I will enjoy putting them in cardboard coin flips and putting them in a mylar storage page. 13. I am old enough to know that if I sell them, I will loose my butt, and it doesn't really bother me. 14. I am old enough to know that it will bring a smile to a little kids face when I give him/her one. Oh well, I have board you enough. Bottom line is, I guess, I am just going to collect them for the fun of it. Any of you guys and gals want to fess up to buying a few and/or collecting them?
I say if they bring you enjoyment collect them!! It sounds like you definitely have a good grasp as to what they are and there's nothing wrong with collecting something you like.
I think that's great. Collect what you enjoy. I don't own any copper rounds, but I do have a few coins here and there that are worthless but I like. One that comes to mind is a large Marshall Islands $5 piece that has the Space Shuttle Discovery on it. It's worthless...but I bought it because I like spaceflight. Plus, it only cost a few dollars.
I have posted a lot of the ones I bought in the thread Let's see your exonumia! Collect what you enjoy. I will be posting a bunch more that I picked up this weekend as I photo them!
I purchased a one pound copper bar just for the heck of it. Nice paper weight and bought it just because I'm old and could.
I think it was $8.00 shipped from Ebay. A waste of money but it is pretty. Around the time when copper was hovering at $4.00 an pound.
There's a dealer in Rhode Island who sells 100 different 1 ounce rounds for $104.00 shipped. He has an ad in Numismatic News every week. I've been pondering this for awhile. It would make for a cheap way to start a nice collection of these w/o searching all over for different designs.
