Hello and thank you for your time! Any information about this penny would be greatly appreciated! It's a 1952 wheat. Has anyone else ever seen one of these???
yes I collect them these are called pop out coins. these are not done at the mint. yours is in nice condition. do not ever clean it.
Wow...thanks for the quick response!! Do you have any info on how they are made? Is there any value in this coin? It's a fun piece to show off either way
Welcome to CT. Nice piece. I see you found the thread about these. These are made using a set of dies. Fun to collect.
Yep. Not done at the mint, but collectible and popular. "County fair" is fairly close to the truth, I think, though more likely something one would find at bigger exhibitions like the World's fairs. If I were to venture a wild guess (and I will- but it's just that- a WAG), I would imagine those were first done sometime around the time of the World's Columbian Exposition in 1892-93. I've seen a lot on Barber coins from around the turn of the century. I think I even saw a tiny patent date incused on the reverse (concave) side of one, once, which was dated in the very early 1900s just like the host coin was. So the machinery that did this must have been patented. The craze for these seems to have had its heyday much earlier in the 20th century, but I see from the CT thread there are modern versions, too. Until I checked that thread out, your 1952-S cent was the latest host coin I had seen. Cool item.
