It was att Philip 1 antoniniaus and I paid $45. Was this too much? It is a beautiful coin, really detailed. Bought it at LCS.
$45 seems fair. It is a nice coin. It seems to be of good metal and has not been overcleaned. Keep that toning and don’t clean it, it looks nice!
Oddly enough I paid $45 for a very similar coin in September of this year so lets compare them. Your coin has a better separation between the ear of the portrait and the radiate crown but has a little more flatness on the leg and torso of the reverse figure. Your coin has a considerable tone which most of us prefer to the more cleaned look of mine which is popular among many new collectors. Do not clean it. You have better centering on the reverse. From your photo I question what I see on the side of the head at the hairline, Is there a bump/dent of some sort or just an anomaly of the photo? I'm occasionally a bit of a cheapskate and would pay no more for either coin but, overall, I'd say you did quite well. If I were in the vicinity of your local coin store, I would want to drop in and see what else was available.
Dougsmit it is a small bump, it looks like there was a small piece of loose metal there while it was struck and was pushed into the coin. The toning I thought was beautiful, it’s shows up more in hand than the pictures. My LCS has more that are in the $80 or so range that are also beautiful. I love ancient coins but am having a tough time learning about them. How to read them, how to attribute them etc. I never know if the price is right or not either. I know US coins very well but with ancients I’m lost. Thank y’all for your interest enough to reply, I thank you for your help.
Alan, here are a a couple of online resources: http://www.wnccoins.com/0022.htm http://www.forumancientcoins.com/dougsmith/ http://esty.ancients.info/numis/learnmore.html
Very nice! I'd happily spend $45 for either posted above! So,I think you paid a fair price and perhaps better and I believe the Ant is RIC 48b, Crawford 215
Here's another good resource: www.vcoins.com. It's a sort of marketplace for dealers. You can use their search engine to compare prices, see what examples in different condition are currently selling for. For example, I put "Philip Securitas" in and got these results: https://www.vcoins.com/en/Search.as...cords=100&SearchOnSale=False&Unassigned=False
