The US Mint struck about 50 times more business strikes (108,984,932) than SMS coins (2,261,583). The condition of the SMS coins is far, far superior to the business strikes. Do you really think that someone would be foolish enough to remove the SMS coin from the plastic case without submitting it for grading? Chris
SMS coins were issued in sets by the mint, just like proof sets are now. In order to find one in circulation, someone would have had to break open the plastic and spend it. Can it happen? Yes. Is it likely? Not really. Is a "free range" SMS half found in circulation worth anything? Yeah, the same as any other 1966 half - bullion value
