Is this MorganDollar Ruined?

I'm assuming that the fact that someone made this dollar a charm has ruined it's value. I have come across several coins like this. If someone could let me know for sure I'd appreciate it

Prettty much, but I'd wait to hear from the experts here in case it's a rare variety, etc.

Still cool if you inherited it or if bought cheaply.

 

Has the bezel damaged the rim? If not, what damage?

 

I don't think I could get that off and I probably wouldn't try because I would be afraid I would damage it. It looks great other than that bezel.

 

It's a common date not worth a whole lot regardless of the bezel. Has a nice look to it though imo, if it's cheap enough go for it!

You show two images of the obverse that are totally different in toning. Did you clean the coin? If so, what did you use?

That kind of bezel usually does not damage the coin. IF the coin has been worn, cleaned, wiped, etc because of it, possibly. It's easy to get off. Get a little screw driver and take the screw out, or just take some snippers and snip that part off. The coin should come out undamaged.

 

By cracky I might take exception to this one. Someone collects these and probably thinks they are wonderful.

I believe this to be a circulated coin with what I would call terminal toning. The use as jewelry and obvious wear make it worth a little over melt, but not a lot. My recommendation might be to dip it, clean it, and wear it. But I wonder if someone out there can determine the VAM?

 

I think it's just the lighting and exposure. The first photo shows the same toning pattern it's just blown out.

Saying it's a common date and not worth a whole lot isn't a slap in the face to the coin it's just the truth...it can still be a wonderful coin. If it was a 93-S with a bezel it would be a bit more heartbreaking than a common 79-S that you can find in droves all over town.

The fact that someone put a bezel on that coin basically ruins the collector value it had. This is because the bezel causes damage to the coin. This is a common date Morgan dollar in low grade anyway and the toning it has is so advanced it's damaging as well. In my opinion, even without the bezel it's only worth melt.

It's a neat piece. There are few things better than classic US silver dollars. But it doesn't have a lot of value.

 

I just took one of the pics with the flash on and off. I haven’t cleaned any of the coins because I’ve heard that would take value away.

 

It is a pretty coin. I’ve never seen one before so I’m glad I have it. @jwitten thank you for that advice. I will try that!

 

It actually is not a pretty Morgan, sorry to say. If you like it as a charm, great. It has no numismatic value, due to the damage from the bezel, and ugly terminal toning.

 

This isn't always true. I had two of my 19mm ANA medals Details-graded because they were placed in a jewelry mount like this and subsequently removed before I took possession of them. The inner edge of the mount can damage the rim.

The only saving grace is that it wasn’t a Carson City minted coin.

 

That's why I said USUALLY doesn't damage, not NEVER damages coins..
