Do consignors at your auctions put reserves on their coins ever? Auction I went to a few weeks ago 95% of coins of interest had reserves 10-20%+ over my max was pretty brutal. No wonder people were commenting about seeing the same coins sitting there for sale for years.

Also if coins like this 1852 $5 go for melt I need to buy a plane ticket and line my pockets

    V. Kurt Bellman Yes, I'm blunt! Get over your "feeeeelings".

Reserves do exist, but they are uncommon. They usually only are placed on major rarities. There were about 20 classic gold pieces in last Friday's sale (only one double eagle, lots of $5), and none of them had a reserve. I had to get to another coin auction about 40 miles away, so I didn't stay to see how high this gold went. I left after the dimes (he goes in denomination order) and the crowd had already thinned by half before I left. There were about 6 guys who did "leave behind" bids. We started with, by my unofficial count, 115 bidders on hand, maybe 50 were still there by the time the dimes were finished. (There were some truly magnificent cents and 3-cent silver pieces. A nice run of BU Liberty nickels, too.) At most auctions, by the time the gold is done, you're down to 6-10 guys.

Nearly EVERY auction I go to has SOME classic gold. It's nothing special at all. And it is VERY ODD to see it slabbed. The consignors who owned it never did TPG's.

It's in Pennsylvania? Do they put out the list of lots decently ahead of time?

That's not a terrible drive for me (if it's PA), maybe I'll make a trip sometime. The main value of auctions by me is to get to see a diverse group of coins in person. No real deals to be had. I did pick up a nice capped bust half this last one but like I said the other 20 or so I was targeting weren't even close to my max.

Yuppirs, about 6-8 various locations within about 50 miles of the capital, all compass points from there. The bugaboo is the timeliness of the lists. Sometimes you only get a few days, even for an online listing. This last one was Black Friday and I only got my list (snail mail) that prior Saturday. That's not a lot of notice with prepping for Turkey Day thrown in there.

East of Harrisburg sales are more frequent, but the ones south and west are MUCH more thinly attended.

Now that you have put face time into this thread, what is your estimate on the sale price of the 5$ Gold?

Wow, I just followed @jwitten's lead, and went low. I thought that the washed out look stopped it from receiving top dollar.

I'll post one tomorrow, unless someone else wants to post one.

    UNC Details - Cleaned

It has the look of a coin with an old cleaning that later toned from storage in an album or holder.

Even if a details coin, I like this example and wouldn’t mind it in my collection. In fact, I may or may not have a similar one...details might be provided in a future post in this thread...:p

Don't ask me to estimate classic gold prices.

    1) In my area, they're cheaper than anywhere else I've ever been, and

    2) I have no top-of-my-head idea which dates are and are not more desirable.

It's just not an area that interests me. I haven't bought a gold coin since 1996.
