I know this is not a 1932 penny.

  1. I know this isn't a 1932 penny. I think. Lol. They didn't have the memorial on the Reverse of the coin in 32. The 8 looks weird. Thanks guys!!! 20171126_231424.jpg 20171126_231430.jpg 20171128_002906.jpg

Yeah, it got a bit chewed up. The "8" took a hit, that's all.

  4. Chewed up in circulation?? And thank you for your time and your response.

Yep. It's a "parking lot penny".

    Roadkill, in other words.

(Actually, the damage in this case looks to be more a result of corrosion than road damage, but it's essentially the same thing.)

Another explanation is that mid 1982 Cents were minted on Copper Plated Zinc Cents..
Looks like the 8 on the 1982 had a plating issue and zinc deterioration formed underneath and created the deformation :yack:

  7. OK thank you. That's what I was figuring on the Reverse side. On the obverse, some of the "punches" or "dents" looked to me like they were pre mint. But coupled with the schooling I got early yesterday morning was very beneficial, but I'm still having trouble making a distinction between error or post minting wear. Thank you all for putting up with a Greenhorn. I appreciate it. One more for the road, if you don't mind. I don't have a magnifying lense or a Jewelers Eye and my eye isn't trained just yet. Luckily everyone on here has been extremely helpfull and polite. 20171128_031142.jpg 20171128_031152.jpg 20171128_031732.jpg

  8. Is that crack an error on the 1949 Nickle?? The Crack looks like it starts at the bottom of the 9. 20171128_040807.jpg

  9. That's pretty cool. Definitely cool enough for me to keep. That's one of the main reasons why I'm so into Pocket Change Pillaging as well as the thrill of the hunt. But mostly the possible story behind it.

A die Crack would show raised in the field. It's a crack on the Die that is used to strike the blank planchet. so the metal from the planchet flows into the crack. If what you are looking at is incused into the field then it is not a Die Crack.. It could be a minor struck through or a normal gouge aka damage

Looks like a scratch on the '49 nickel, but if that's a circulation find, it's a fun one. Not terribly valuable, of course, but finding the old Jeffies in change still puts a smile on my face. :)

  12. Thanks everyone. It's the thrill of the hunt. All of my finds are circulation finds.

As long as you realize that when it comes time to pass your collection along to your children, it will still only be worth face value.

The eight does look a little goofy but it’s been hit a couple of times I’d say. Any 1982 cents I handle ALL get weighed so I know what I am dealing with even in this case where it would not help I still would have weighed. If this cent was mine and a type 1 I’d throw it in the penny smasher can and make it a memory someday!
About the nickel, yup scratch. Bummer. BUT every you see a suspect scratch now you know boom not a die crack. Keep it up dude and you will find die cracks, planchet errors, strike throughs and all manner of wonderful errors just don’t over magnify and be patient.

  15. Thanks a lot. I weigh all of my penny's that are 1983 to 2008. They're supposed to weigh 2.5 to 2.7. But a few were struck on other planchets and those weigh around 3.11g. I'm not worried either about my collection values, the history is more important to me than any price. Thank you
