Hi! I have 1974 Nickel with and stamp on the back which should not be there. Its a big letter S stamped on the back. Not sure if it was an error by mint or someone put there. The stamp seems as old as the coin. Please let me know if anyone else seen one or how I can get it checked. Thanks! RobinT
Somebody had an S stamp and too much time on their hands. No possible way it could have come from the mint like that.
It is counter stamped. There are collectors that look for counter stamped coins to add to their collection.
First, welcome to the neighborhood! Like @l.cutler said, someone had nothing better to do. They were probably trying to mimic the mintmarks used on the war nickels. FWIW, during World War II, nickels were produced with 35% silver content because nickel (the metal) was needed for the war effort. It was originally intended that these coins would be recalled after the war ended. So, the mintmarks (P, D & S) were made much larger than a normal mintmark and placed above the dome of Monticello. It was intended that this would make them easy to identify. However, these nickels became very popular among collectors, and the government never recalled them. Chris
That wasn't explained to the new collector. It just said there was a big mint mark stamped above the dome of Monticello. Good for you teasing the Kindergartner that can't read yet because you're in 3rd grade and can.
The OP is 54! Shame on you for implying that he has "smarts" no better than a child. Re-read my original comment, fool! I never said the mintmark was stamped. I was merely giving the OP some background on the War Nickels. I was collecting coins long before you were ever born. It pays to do your homework before you try to put yourself on a pedestal. Chris
Thanks guys I thought that may what happened was someone just stamped with a stamp. If this nickel would came from the mint that was big mistake. I was just checking because I have never seen that before on a coin in that year. I thought maybe I missing something when I found this nickel in a punch of old coins my mother had. My mother must had found it intersting that nickle had over size stamp of an S on the back. Like u all said someone had to much time on their hands, but intersting for sure. Thanks Guys.
